I’ll admit bias towards my first encounter with this place as Tay’s Burger Shack about a mile-ish east of here is one of my favorite burgers in the city. I’m very happy to say the new cheesesteak place upholds Tay’s good standing in the city.
I was here at noon on a beautiful Saturday and while it wasn’t packed, there was a steady stream of customers. The interior is cute and definitely clean. The employees were typical Tay’s employees - nice, friendly (smiles!), helpful with any questions and best of all, appeared glad that I was there. That means the world to me.
The menu is simple. They offer 3 types of cheesesteak sandwiches: Regular Tay’s (with one choice of cheese), Cheesy Tay’s (two cheeses) and the Italian Tay’s with marinara and Parmesan). All sandwiches come in steak or chicken, onions, with a choice of white American or Pepper Jack, and the Cheesy gives you an additional choice of cream cheese or Cheez Whiz (Yo, Philly!). There’s also Reuben or Hot Pastrami sandwiches for $12.
Finally, you can add mushrooms, cherry peppers or green peppers to your cheesesteak for a nominal fee. 50 cents for a half, $1 for a whole.
Sides include fries, chips, potato salad, a pickle or extra Cheez Whiz. Plus, there are plenty of sauces and condiments available including Tay’s sriracha ketchup or Mayo.
Cheesesteaks come in 6” size (half) for $10 to $11.50 and 12” (whole) for $20 to $23.
I got the half Cheesy Tay’s with Jack and cream cheese and mushrooms and it was amazing! Prepared perfectly and served on a fresh roll that was delicious all by itself, they do not skimp on the meat. Along with a drink and side of those wonderful peppery Tay’s french fries, I was stuffed for the rest of the day for $14.
I will be a frequent customer at both Tay’s establishments...
Read moreThe menu is easy to read. They have chicken and steak sandwiches. You can get veggies only if you want. They have 2 sizes of sandwiches 4 inches and 8 inches. You can get with and without a few different cheeses. They also had some individual little dessert snacks.
Very tasty sandwiches, we got the 4" steak phillie sandwiches which curbed our hunger. Juicy and smooth. Their dips or sauces for the sandwich are okay. They have au jus which was one of the few things I can have. They did not have any Worcestershire or A1. They did have chipotle mayo, siracha mayo, and a couple of other sauces. So while it was good the sauce bar could use a little more variety. The fries were delicious the seasoning hit the spot. You can also get the toppings on their fries which to be honest would be so good I bet. The fry portion between a small and large are similar and my friend and I could have split an order.
The atmosphere was very laid back and made dining fun to check out the surroundings. Just little café tables with chairs. There is a breezeway outside the restaurant between themselves and the next restaurant. I had hoped it was going to have tables and chairs. It was Beautiful outside. So that was a little letdown but in April when the weather changes quickly I get it. The staff was super nice and were quite personable. They were quick with delivering the order we placed. It is self-serve on drinks and you are left to your own pretty much. It made chatting during lunch easygoing. I would...
Read moreMy wife and daughter are cheesesteak fanatics. Cheesesteaks are rarely my go-to entree at any KC area restaurant. Tay's has very good cheesesteaks, and offers an alternative to the traditional hoagie style roll.
Between the 3 of us we ordered 2 "Cheesy Tay's" on rolls, 1 "Effin Hot" on a bed of rice and 2 regular orders of seasoned fries. The portions were generous and the quality of the cheesesteaks was outstanding.
I enjoy spicy food, and the Effin Hot does a great job of being spicy without the spice overwhelming the flavor. I really appreciate the option to have rice instead of the roll. There is a spice bar where you can add additional sriracha mayo should you like even more kick. The consensus on the Cheesy Tay was that it is easily the best cheesesteak near the downtown area, with quality that rivals if not exceeds Chartreuse Caboose in Overland Park.
The seasoned fries were good and in fact very seasoned. They are not something I'll ever have a strong craving for, but they aren't supposed to be the star of the meal. There are additional options that add toppings to the fries, but we didn't try any of those on this trip. I did try sriracha ketchup with the fries which was an interesting flavor..
The three of us were all happy with our decision to try Tay's, and when we left we were full enough that we decided to forgo going to...
