Update! I'm so happy to say that Painter's is back to its former glory! I returned (in my 49th year!) with family friends because Painter's is a tradition. I was so happy to find that it was as good as it has ever been. Whatever changed, I'm grateful -- and there are some awesome new flavors. Yummy ice cream and happy people. Disregard the former post. It's back to the best ice cream on the beach.
Disregard: I have been going to Painter's my entire life, and I'm 48 years old. This review comes from my nostalgic heart. Painter's ice cream has always been wonderful, but something has changed and it is not what it used to be.
I don't know what has happened with the ownership or ingredients used to make the ice cream, but the quality has greatly diminished. For years it has been the same happy guy, but this time the person at the window seemed grumpy and didn't happily interact with customers. That wasn't the worst part, though. The ice cream IS NOT the same.
The ice cream gave my mouth a strange filmy coating. It was like the kind of film from cheap Walmart birthday cake or something. I've never experienced this at Painters before. The color of the chocolate was different -- much lighter. My friend ordered strawberry cheesecake and Oreo flavors. There used to be huge chunks of cheesecake and Oreos in them. This time there were NO chunks of cheesecake, and only tiny ground "Oreo" bits.
The quality of the ice cream was like the cheapest store-bought kind. I have always LOVED Painter's Bec it was homemade with REAL ingredients. It was an integral part of my childhood summer happiness, and the flavor and quality has been consistent until now-- 48 years later.
If the owners are reading this, yes, we can tell you use cheaper ingredients. I would rather pay more to have the quality and consistency of the "original" than buy what I can pay a fraction of the price at Walmart. Your customers notice. Our palates are more sophisticated than you give us credit for and you can't pass off cheap ingredients onto your loyal customers. I will try it again one day, but if it continues to be subpar, you have lost a...
Read moreLong review but alot to cover with this very expensive ice cream! We went while visiting Myrtle Beach this past week. We are from a tourist town (Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg) so we understand higher pricing BUT these portions were ridiculously small without the product to back the price. I would be surprised if a scoop was actually 4 ounces. We were a group of 9 and 7 of us had double scoops, 5 in waffle cones, 1 had a single scoop & 1 got a milkshake. It was $72 for that. All the ice cream together would not have equaled a half a gallon. Now this wouldnât have been that big of deal had the ice cream flavor backed that price. 5 of us threw our ice cream away. The milkshake was so runny, in a 12 ounce cup that wasnât even filled. Seriously looked like a kids drink cup from McDonaldâs. There is very little flavor to any of the ice cream. It tastes like slightly flavored cream. I got the lemon and it was honestly ok but I expected more flavor. The chocolate, cookies & cream, & vanilla were horrible. The Strawberry was just ok but nothing good or great. The staff is very rude and basically just shoves your order at you. We waited all week to end our vacation here only to be out a total of $85 including tip just to throw most of it away and get $5 double scoop cones from our resort. We will never be back. They should be ashamed of theirselves for their lack of quality product as well as lack of customer service or just plain ole common courtesy! Instead of the owner responding to negative comments on his FB page, he deletes any negative comments so you canât judge what you read on the company FB page because he controls what is shown and only shows...
Read moreThe ice cream is good - but not worth the bad attitude. Weâve been coming here for years whenever we come to N. Myrtle Beach which is at least a couple times each year. Went tonight with our family of 6 and order about $30 worth of ice cream. When they handed my husband the wrong flavor - supposed to be just a scoop of their banana pudding flavor in a cup and instead got peanut butter chocolate - he said it was supposed to be banana pudding. Rather than just give us the single scoop I ordered, they pulled out the order slip, brought over the blond cashier and then she began arguing with my husband that it wasnât what I ordered (he agreed it was, and he had heard me order it). She then YELLED at me ACROSS the crowd of people at the window that it âwasnât what you ordered.â I get it. I work in an ER. I understand times are stressful. Iâve also lived in NYC and am not afraid of people with attitude, but was not expecting it here. We werenât angry or aggressive, just asked for what we ordered. They could have just given us the cup - I donât know why they wouldnât (maybe the employees get charged for wasting a scoop of ice cream?!). Rather than argue with her in front of a couple dozen people and my children over a $4 cup of ice cream, I took the classier option and just said âthatâs fineâ and took the cup. I then saw an employee screech at someone when they didnât respond to their number right away to the point the people at the window jumped. So unless you are a local (it sounds like they favor local residents), plan on fighting with an employee over a cheap cup of ice cream, or are willing to just eat whatever you get, this isnât the...
