This is now on my regular go-to list. After hearing about it for months, we stopped in for dinner. As everyone else has said, the food is amazing.
Obviously green chiles are the focus of everything. And thank goodness! I expected a more traditional Mexican menu, but I’m so glad it wasn’t. As the owner, who stopped by our table as we ate, said- it’s NEW Mexican, which I admit I didn’t know was “a thing”.
We started with Mexican street corn as an appetizer. I was a bit shocked to see it was around $8 or so, but when it arrived it was clearly meant for a table of 4+. It was huge. I didn’t see any of the mayo/chile powder that usually comes with elote. Instead it had it own flavor with green chile powder. We ate it until it was gone- very good.
Wife and I both ordered the birria tacos. The consommé that is usually served with birria was missing. Instead it had its own green chile dipping sauce. Wow! Again, a hit. The sides of beans and rice were equally good. Don’t be fooled by the small street taco sizes- neither one of us could finish our plates.
My daughter ordered dessert- the ice cream churro. It, too, was huge. It’s a churro fried in the shape of a cup with ice cream in the center. Delectable. Too big to finish, but she got close.
The waiter also gave us a complementary serving of sopapillas which were simple and hot and every bit as good as the rest of our order.
Upon seeing the menu, we were probably like anyone else— how expensive is New Mexico food going to be? And it’s a bit expensive. But, the servings are big. Keep that in mind. The food I mentioned above, plus soft drinks for us 3, came to $75. After eating, though, I believe it is worth it. Side note- the soft drinks are $4+ each, which is pricier than most places. We never had an empty glass, but this, to us, was our only complaint.
Service was great. Atmosphere is small and unique. Location is ok… it’s hard to find a good location in North Salt Lake. But it didn’t seem to matter. There was a steady stream of customers while we were there- to eat and to get take-out.
I watched three huge guys come in while we were eating. I could tell they could pack down a meal. And I could see it was their first time, too. Their food was gone in minutes, and each one gave at least one small eye roll and head shake as their way of saying “wow...
Read moreAnother amazing meal: chicken fajitas nice tender chicken, little heat with some char on green peppers and onions. Beef Philly - tender meat and oh so plentiful with meat and veggies.
Friendly greeting as we walked in the door. Complimentary chips and salsa shortly after sitting. Salsa has nice tomato base with hint of warm source that comes up a few moments after each bite. Very good. Added chips and queso with signature green chile sauce. Velvety smooth with diced tomatoes and more green chile. So good it's hard to stop. Had chicken quesadilla, green chile cheeseburger, and green chile chicken sandwich. Juicy, flavorful chicken mixed with tasty cheese blend. Pico, guacamole, and seasoned crema sides to round it out. Green chile cheeseburger is a 10 oz patty grilled to order. Cooked perfect for my taste (slight pink middle) and oh so juicy. Game winner! 10 oz chicken patty is breaded and cooked to order. Crispy and well seasoned - yum! Both the cheeseburger and chicken sandwich use never frozen meat and are served on buns baked daily just for Green Chile House. The fries with both were perfect, crispy exterior and tender inside - lightly seasoned to accompany the green chile sauce. In addition to the regular staff, the owner stopped by a couple times during our visit and asked how everything was. Offered his genuine thanks for us stopping by and told us about the food we were enjoying. We ended with complementary sopapillas. Fresh dough, not pre-made like some other places. Honey on the table if you feel like an extra touch of sweetness. We find out they're known for sopapillas cheesecake - that is made fresh every day- so we got a piece to go. Gigantic portion of of pillowey cheesecake filling mixed with crunchy bits of cinnamon and sopapilla. Friendly service, great food and environment, a real concern for making your meal everything it can be. We'll be...
Read moreOur family has deep New Mexican roots and after reading all the positive reviews for Green Chile House we were excited have a taste of home. Unfortunately, Green Chile House did not deliver. Starting from the beginning - chips and salsa, the chips were great but the sauce that was served with the chips could hardly be called salsa. Appetizers, on the recommendation of our server we ordered Mexican Street corn, the corn didn't have traditional roasted corn flavor, and there was so much sauce it ate more like a soup. We also had the chile mozzarella sticks, the batter was tasty but the cheese wasn't warm and didnt have the desired melted cheese. For entres we had chile rellenos, stuffed sopapillas, and carne asada tacos. The chile rellenos the egg batter was lacking in flavor, and the most disappointing part was the crunchy unroasted chiles, and the cheese was almost nonexistant. The stuffed sopapilla we ordered Christmas style both red and green chile the green chlie was ok, the red chile was unnatural in color and flavorless, and the sopapilla was mostly stuffed with rice, disappointing. The carne asada tacos, the corn tortilla taco shell was everything I love about tacos and the filing can only be rated as ok. Last, the sopapillas that came at the end of the meal were amazing, warm, light, airy, delicious. An annoyance during our meal was the very small, unstable table. We have all been there, an unstable table that can be corrected with weight or leveling but in this instance it was the tabletop itself making it difficult to eat our meal. Our server was enthusiastic about the menu, friendly, and attentive. Great service. We hope you find this as an honest constructive review. Unfortunately, we did not find a taste of home, and will not...
