Pompeo’s is a breakfast beacon seated just atop the northernmost end of the Wildwood boardwalk.
Here you will find the gastronomic delights of Chef Richard, a true master of presentation and pairings. His heavenly specials were what really caressed me in and kept me coming back. It was here that I enjoyed the three greatest breakfasts of my life. I had waffles on my first visit and on my second and last I made a fatal error. I chose to try a french toast special so wonderful it made me want to buy a house next door. You can see this delight pictured here: Caramel Pecan French Toast! If the photographs don’t speak well enough for themselves, allow me to add the remainder of the details.
Pompeo’s gives new meaning to on-the-spot. Each time I was here my food came to me faster than even was able the steam from my coffee. Never have I been served a meal so quickly...ALL THREE TIMES! To see what is pictured here brought out before you in such a short period of time can only be described in terms of feeling as absolute fulfillment! Truly extraordinary! Then the flavors: a carnival of taste more pleasing to the palate than even Morey’s Piers to the vacationing traveler.
Such was the pleasure of my meal at Pompeo’s on my first day trip this summer that by the third trip I had taken after Labor Day I made a mental recognition of the outdoor sign signaling me that I would once again have one of the most enjoyable meals of my life! Pavlov’s dogs never salivated so much!
The service at Pompeo’s is phenomenal! The staff are unbelievably friendly and helpful and will extend the highest of courtesies possible. Brian, thank you for running a length of the boardwalk to bring me my water bottle carrier that I left behind! If you are lucky enough to be served by Richard’s beautiful mother you’re in for a real treasure. She will spare no detail of the beauty and history in Pompeo’s itself. But don’t take her word for it. Chef Richard is not far away and so happy to share with you in your delights. I talked my two jovial hosts to death and still they had taken such joy in my satisfaction.
Whether you’re just a pass through shoobie like me or a local resident, allow yourself the pleasure of the “Best Breakfast On Boardwalk”. You can...
Read moreThis may be the worst service for breakfast I've ever experienced. I have one other very bad experience, but that was with a full restaurant and literally one server. I ate breakfast here today and they had 4 servers, so this may be the worst.
First, we arrived to a 40% full restaurant and were told that, "due to severe staffing issues, it will be a 20 minute wait at minimum". Okay, not a problem. We waited about 10 minutes and then were seated. We immediately got water/coffee, and then waited about 15 minutes to have our breakfast order taken. When the waitress, who walked past us no less than 12 times, finally took our order, she never acknowledged the wait. Then, we waited what seemed like a very long time for our food, which wasn't bad, and then after finishing, when she asked if we wanted the check and we said yes, we waited another 10-15 minutes. Our breakfast took entirely too long.
And, I want to make clear that I have NO ISSUE waiting if you have staffing issues, but several things made no sense. First, the restaurant was never more than 50% full when we were there. They had 4 servers AND A hostess. It was manageable. Second, the hostess was just sitting at the computer most of the time folding napkins, when she could have been helping out in some way. Third, they were still putting out place settings at EVERY table despite being half full and short-staffed. Why wouldn't you just set the number of tables that you knew you could actually manage? I believe the owner came in towards the end of our meal as well and I could hear her talking to a waitress and the words, "they'll just have to wait" come out.
To me, the staffing isn't the issue, it's the management. They could have definitely made things easier on the staff if they put some preparation into how they were going to function with a limited staff. Instead, we get, "they'll just have to wait". What's ironic is that last year, in the absolute height of Covid, we ate here and it was incredible. The chef/cook even came out front and asked us how our meal was. That's why we went back this year. This was a complete disaster. There's just no way I could ever...
Read moreThe only reason our breakfast was not a complete disaster was thanks to the cooks, and our waiter Joe G. There were about 6 tables when we arrived, and there were already issues with a table’s order. This poor waiter could not figure out the mix up, all the while there was no manager in site to help her staff or talk with customers. Things were so hectic that they stopped seating people for some time. It took about 35-40 min to get our food, during which we watched who I assume to be the manager (I believe her name was Liz) sit there on her phone, tell people to buss tables, and then walk around to the empty 6 and 8 tops adjusting water glasses. Mind you, there were several dirty tables waiting to be cleaned, and they weren’t seating new parties, but there was the “manager” just slightly adjusting unused water glasses on unused tables. Finally, after about 30 minutes, the manager walked around to the tables and check that everyone’s order has been taken, only to go back to her phone or rolling silverware or whatever minimal task she could find that wasn’t actually helping the customers waiting on their food. At one point, our waiter Joe was filling the bucket of coffee creamers while the line cooks are walking out of the kitchen with food! You can guess where the manager was….off rolling silverware or adjusting place settings. It was truly embarrassing to see how helpless the staff looked, all because their management was not stepping in at the times they needed to. The two stars are for Joe G., and the line cooks, our food was very good and service was great for all that he was...
