The food was great and I still got fresh veg for my pho and a nice amount and it was made very well but I will never be back. This was my first time in. I got here exactly a half hour before close. A man said “excuse me what do you want” I said “are yall still open?” Thinking I misread the sign. He said “yeah but we usually do last call at 9:30. But I guess we can serve you if you pick something quick.” I said “a bowl of pho, let me see the menu for just a sec please and I can tell you a number” since I know most of these places number them for ease of ordering. He pointed at the stack of menus. I hadn’t been seated yet and I’m now being directed to just grab a menu from the host stand. He asked for here or to go I said for here and I’ll make it really quick. He said just sit somewhere. So, I picked a seat. Someone then said something about locking the door even though there is a sign on the door that says “doors are to remain unlocked during business hours.” Someone brought me water and was saying things under his breath and snickering to someone else as he dropped it off and took my order. I was brought my food and the check very quickly (I know pho isn’t something that takes long to make happen at the end of the day, another reason why I knew I could smash a bowl and be done in a half hour). When he brought my food he also had the check I said “hey I can go ahead and pay,” again, trying to be aware of the lateness in my arrival. He took my payment. While I was eating, instead of checking on me, one of the people came over and checked my book SEVERAL times to see if I had signed, reaching over my bowl of pho. Never checked to see how I was or the meal, no attempt made. Just lets see if that slip has been signed. Kept reaching over the table and flipping the little booklet open and back shut. It got to the point that I left without finishing. I just signed (I even still tipped because I get it, I showed up at almost close) and left my unfinished bowl since they all congregated in the dining room and kept staring at me and coming over only to check on the pay slip for a tip and signature. I said “sorry to be a bother,” and left,…with 15 min before close still…. Today is the death of a friend committing suicide and this was the only meal I’ve had to eat after a long day at work. So I left the place frustrated, deeply disappointed, and in shock of how much of a burden the entire closing staff had treated me like over not something cooked to order, but a bowl of soup. I was really looking forward to finding a place open that wasn’t McDonald’s or pizza and pho was a comfort food I was looking forward to after a bad day. I too work in restaurants and have for over a decade. I get it, I get the grind and the late customer frustration but I’ve never in all my life been made to feel like that when going somewhere, even close to close. I would have preferred to be told I’m sorry kitchen is closed than treated like that. Never again. If anyone who works there reads this, please know that I have worked 36 hour shifts and have had to deal with some nasty guests and terrible days in this industry. So I get the frustration but you made me feel like crap due to how my day was going and then being met with your collective hostility. Your food was great but I hope you never treat anyone like that ever again. You never know why someone is coming into your restaurant late. It wasn’t to be disrespectful. It was out of appreciation of you still being open and just looking for that quick bowl...
Read moreEvery time we've eaten here, the food has been excellent! Everything we've tried, appetizers, Pho, salads, and entrees are delicious, prepared well, and with beautiful presentations!
Usually, our service is above and beyond excellent, and I would've given 4-stars for service. However, this time was different.
Our server was attentive, helpful, and pleasant with us despite being extremely busy. We needed more time with the menu, and he mentioned he had just gotten a large table so he'd get them started with drinks and return. I watched how busy he was and how well he was handling it. I've been a server, bartender, trainer, and management before my current career.
So when our food came out, and we were missing a soup, we tried to catch his attention. Note: A different employee brought out the food, so our server didn't know. He was very busy and didn't make it toward our table for a bit.
Another server casually walked by us on his way to clear an empty table behind us. He was the ONLY one of the staff on the "floor" who wasn't rushing around working and helping. I caught his attention and politely asked if he would mind letting letting our server know we were missing the soup. He was obviously miffed that I stopped him. Then he behaved as if he didn't understand me, just stared at me. I didn't ask him to get our soup; I asked him to simply let our server know to stop by our table. He gave me a rude look, as if saying, "that's not my job, how dare you stop me," and walked off without saying one word.
I mentioned my history in this industry to emphasize my complete understanding of a busy Saturday night at a restaurant. Our actual server was "double sat" with us and a large party, plus his existing tables! I would never expect, and no one should, our server to get to us instantly. He already explained the situation, which is exactly what servers should do, and we were the ones who delayed ordering. I place no blame on him. He was excellent! It wasn't too long before he automatically came to check on us and resolved the soup issue easily.
This other rude server, I didn't get his name, should be coached on the fact that backing another server helps all servers, including himself, provide an excellent customer experience and thus better tips. Trained on how to interact with a customer and to communicate with the other servers/employees is critical during a rush.
Out of all our many visits to Saigon Basil, this is the ONLY time I had a less than wonderful experience. I highly recommend checking it out! We'll...
Read moreI have eaten at this establishment over a hundred times with good service and great food. They just hired a new lady whom answers the phone and takes orders. I went in on Memorial Day after getting off work to pick up a 50 dollar order to take home to my family, including my 3 little children, who loves their noodle bowls.
They were extremely busy and after they asked me what I ordered, 10 minutes later they sat a bag down in front of me. The lady whom answers for to-go orders comes by and asks for my card, I pay, pick up the bag placed right in front of me, say thank you 'to her', and leave.
Now I live 30 minutes away from there, and as I pull into my driveway I receive a call from her stating that "I TAKE someone order without waiting for her, when she told me WAIT, and goes on and on and on". I told her that I have a family and kids and it is not possible to come all the way back. What I did get was half of what I ordered.
I called back the next day to speak with a manager and she would not let me speak with anyone else. She stated she was the manager, and continued to elaborate on her story "I have camera, I was planning on delivering, and on and on and on". Which just helped confirm to me her character, or lack thereof, as everything she said is false.
I work right down the road from there as a manager for a fortune 500 company w/ dozens of employees that work for me. I will encourage them to not eat at this establishment, nor will they see my card used there any time in the near future.
This new woman unfortunately does not understand customer service. They are going to lose tens of thousands in profits from dozens of people as we eat here every week, instead of learning what good customer service is. It's disappointing that the manager Trung will not respond to repeated messages that I have left him.
I'm sure this lady w/ her phenomenal customer service skills will be fired within a month or two, but I plan on not returning here for 2-3 years. There are lots of choices...
