Wow, where shall I start. Waiter was not friendly at all. Second after receiving our food, good size portions I will say, no extra napkins were offered, rolls or cornbread, I bring that particularly to attention as the table beside us were waiting for a 4th guest and were served continually rolls and cornbread. Wait now, you think maybe they ordered extra, well not thinking that when we sat and clearly watched 3 other tables receive unlimited rolls and cornbread as well. Then a gentleman was walking around perhaps manager, NOT FRIENDLY EITHER. Didn't feel welcome at all. As a matter of fact as we were finishing I needed a to go container and i asked our waiter as he was walking by, he just turned his head slightly and gave an ok like I was bothering him. To top the ending off the "Manager" we're guessing in a black jacket and the hostess we're standing behind us about 20 feet. Standing there staring at us. Then the minute we stood up not even one foot away from table, they pounced on the table cleaning it. We won't mention the table beside us who clearly had been there a whole lot longer than us. We appreciate restaurant business and not to linger however let us walk out before attacking the table. As this WASN'T the case when we arrived and WAITED for our dirty table to be cleaned. The restaurant wasn't busy. Probably getting busy, however not a cool way to make a customer feel appreciated and want to come back. Not to mention the way we felt personally, as we thought "judging people" nowadays had ended... yes we left a tip as always, but not my usual. Anyone that's knows us knows we tip above and beyond and always cash... don't think this will make our list of...
Read moreWhen I eat here I'm always wandering why I don't eat here more. The food is hearty, hot, good old grub just like the name suggests. The amount of choices in sides alone is really large and I'm sure they are all good. I've tried very few because one of the reasons I do go to the black eyed pea is to get the squash casserole. Which is great! We started off with the fried green tomatoes which tasted fine but were a very small order so that was kind of disappointing. Black eyed pea offers complimentary rolls with butter and after this visit I realize if you request it they can come with honey as well they were good and hot. We were there on a Monday so the chicken fried steak or chicken fried chicken was the special and actually it's literally a special reduced by I think $4 off the normal menu price. I definitely did not see a need to get the full size as the smaller size covers over half the plate. The jalapeno gravy is always great but for me it could be little more spicy but it's good overall and as I mentioned before my sides included the squash casserole and loaded potatoes. There's a 99 cent upcharge on the potatoes if you get them loaded which the waitress did not mention. My husband got the burger which had a huge onion ring on it and was pretty good. I'm not a burger person so don't know about what standards to judge it. All I can say is hubby liked it and I didn't mind it. Old fashioned banana pudding vanilla wafers included was a great way to...
Read moreI've eaten here before but never gave a review because, well, it has over 1K reviews, what's left to say? BUT - I ordered their turkey dinner for pickup, and was SOOOO impressed with this restaurant! I went to pick up at 3p, and I was expecting a madhouse. There were people waiting, but it wasn't clogged up. It looked like there were 3 hosts, one who acknowledged me right away. "I'm here for pickup." He told me where to go. One couple was leaving with their bag, and their server promptly smiled and asked for my name. A man came out of the kitchen. He saw me looking at him and asked if I'd been helped. Yes. Then I thanked him for the staff having to work on the holiday and being open. And how organized and well-run the place seemed to be. He was very gracious and professional. Then the server came out with my bag and we went over it. She was so cheerful, such a good ambassador, smiling from ear to ear. It was so refreshing that what's probably their busiest day of their year, they were so well staffed, and that staff was so friendly and good at their jobs. (The turkey was delicious, but the stuffing... not dried enough bread crumbs? It was one ball of cement.) But I was just glad we got to enjoy turkey on...
