Florentina's Specialty Bakery & Cafe — Restaurant in Northvale

We had our wedding in August at the Rockleigh, and we had two possible bakeries included in the Rockleigh’s package. We went with GMK Cakes because they worked with us to get us the best deal.

Nav from GMK Cakes was very welcoming, organized, and efficient throughout the entire process. We had a great cake-tasting experience. He was definitely willing to work with us to nail down the perfect cake, the perfect design, and the perfect price. He even stayed late for us for the cake-tasting to accommodate our schedule. We have the highest recommendations for him.

One thing that couples who are doing this for the first time should know: The cake that comes included in the Rockleigh package (at either bakery) is pretty basic. Most fillings and flower designs are going to cost extra. Most of the cakes that are displayed at the GMK showroom and shown in their brochure include extra features. So be careful to ask what is included in your reception package. All those realistic-looking flowers are beautiful! But they add up. We ended up asking our florist to decorate the cake instead.

GMK allowed us to have different cake types for different tiers. So we had vanilla cake for our 500 guests, and chocolate cake in the top tier for ourselves. For all tiers, we had vanilla buttercream icing, a layer of chocolate ganache in the middle, and strawberry pieces throughout.

The cake was beautiful in the end and all our guests were very happy with it. We got huge compliments, particularly on the combination of moist cake and juicy strawberries. Personally, our only complaint is that the layer of chocolate ganache was thinner than we expected. The sample given to us at the cake-tasting was rich, thick, and decadent. It was almost like biting into a slab of chocolate in the middle of the cake. It was something we were looking forward to, and sad to miss out on.

But, overall: fantastic cake, fantastic price, fantastic customer service....

I would give this bakery 0 stars if I could.

I spent many hours going into the bakery, talking to the baker, and sending pictures/ discussing what I wanted for my easy and clear cut custom cake.

The baker, Jason, was not thorough with his questions at all. This was all done on Monday/Tuesday and I was ensured I would have the cake on Saturday ready for a 1pm pick up.

On Saturday at 2pm, I received a call asking me to come earlier to pick up the cake. I explained someone would be coming in the next 10 minutes. After this, I was told the baker DID NOT make my cake. They said he could TRY to make it for a 6pm pickup.

I was put on hold for 10 minutes, then my calls were ignored. No one would speak with me and I heard them discussing what to do with my call in the background.

I have never received such poor service like this. The people at this bakery should truly be ashamed...

(Less than 1 star wasn’t an option)I wanted to give the local bakery some business. I ordered a cake in person a week in advance, spoke to the baker personally regarding the specific cake and prepaid. I arrived on the date I was to pick it up and after waiting for my order for 15 minutes I was given a song and dance that my cake wasn’t ready “yet” and that I could pick it up later. I knew something was amiss and asked them if the cake hadn’t been prepared. Long story short the order was not filled and I was left without a special order cake and scrambling to find a replacement a few hours before the event. I was given a refund but no apologies. Fail fail as far as I’m concerned. Sorry, you guy’s didn’t make the cut, no way to...
