Maya Palenque Restaurant — Restaurant in Novato

Although today was the worst service I have ever received there, I have to still give 5 stars. I'd give ore if I could. The food is that outstanding and my regular favorite wait staff are that friendly and fabulous. Today we went to eat on the porch. We asked for a shaded area and we're directed to sit in the sun. We asked again for shade and were told what the "couldn't do" which I have always hated. If you want my money, tell me what you CAN do. Eventually we got our shady table and the food was above and beyond delicious. The wait staff didn't want to come near us and avoided us as much as possible. We had to stop them as they'd run by to get any attention. The bill was under $17. I gave a $20 and a $5. They didn't give me change. I would have left the whole amount because generally I over-tip. But poor, nearly hostile, service shouldn't assume they're receiving a $7+ tip. Or 40%. We asked for the change and received the $5 bill back instead of breaking the bill into 5 ones. When I tried to tell the server about breaking the five he told me most people would have just left it all for a tip. Okay I would have also, but now I'm leaving 20% because it was so bad. Imagine, 20% as a standard for bad service. If I see either of them serving instead of my favorite servers, I'll have to leave. Love the restaurant, but I don't want to pay for hostility. Wish I could have tipped that...

It's mexican food, it's good - not the best - maybe for Novato it is. The dining room is pretty nice. The bar is good. Food is a bit pricey for the type of food, but, it's most likely high rent there. So, I don't like paying for the rent. Just the food. I've had good and bad experience with the wait staff. I had one waitress come running out to the parking lot. I left her tip on the charge card - I do that allot - and then left what was left over from a trip to the bar because I had waited for the waitress long enough. It was maybe 3 or 4 dollars. I just left it on the table. Anyway ----- She comes running out to yelling distance, and, in front of a lot of people - including 3 car loads of people I was with - all saying our goodbyes in the parking lot - and yells "hey - thanks for the BIG TIP big spender!" while holding the 3 or 4 dollars up. Then turns around before I can say anything and runs back into the restaurant. What a B**tch. My friends ask "did you stiff her?" "no" I says - "I left about 25 percent on the charge card for her" .. I really felt like going back in and taking that back, but, I had places to go. So - have not and will not go back since then. But - it's not a bad place - too bad though - NONE of us have ever gone back - about 12 or 15 of...

We came at 9:59 on Tuesday evening 11/3/24 and the guy behind the bar says they close at 10pm.

We tried Maya Pelenque again, this time coming just after 9pm on Monday 9/23/24. We sat outside with my dog. Nice evening, not many customers. They were anxious for us to order, saying the kitchen was closing soon. I asked what the hours were. He said they close at 10pm except Thursdays are karaoke night and they stay open a lot later. He said Fridays are later also. Nothing mentioned about Saturday hours. He said they close early some nights when there's no customers. You may want to call before going there. The food was good. I tried their shredded beef enchilada, home made chile rellano, and pork tamale. I suggested new hours for Google. Last time it took Google 3 tries from me before they made Tuesday closing at 10pm...
