Perhaps the worst experience ever in attempting to get what looked like above average nigiri sushi. It was a Sunday afternoon - they were extremely busy for lunch. I was a single, asked to be seated at the bar - waited about 20min...so far not bad.
It then took approximately 15min for someone to ask if I wanted something to drink, requested water and ocha. As I watched others around get their water and tea cups refilled, I did not see any ocha or water for another 10min. By now, the other seats at the bar had turned so there were new customers both to my left and right. Both new customers were served water and tea and had their orders taken before I was asked if I was ready to order. I handed over the sheet with 6 orders of standard fare nigiri - hamachi, sake, saba, uni, ikura and tako x2.
As seats continued to turn at the bar and sushi was flying out to the table diners I waited an additional 35min, asking from time to time how much longer it was going to be - .
As I watched new customer after new customer sit, order, receive and eat their meals that included udon, maki sushi, nigiri and sashimi, I waited - for 6 standard, classic no muss, no fuss orders of nigiri sushi.
After one server saw and realized I was now upset in addition to being hungry, she spoke to the sushi chef in Japanese. The chef crinkled his nose and said curtly "he can wait". Problem is, I don't look Japanese but I was born in Japan and speak the language fluently.
I politely pushed back from the bar, walked to the server station with 3 or 4 servers standing around in some kind of huddle and I told them that I had run out of patience and time and that I was leaving.
The response, and I kid you not, was...."ok". As I walked out the door, not a single server, manager, chef, bus boy, no one said anything!
It was so disappointing to find such a promising spot to get decent sushi in Michigan, only to be treated as poorly as this and experience service that was so abysmal. I was hoping to have a very different experience. Too bad really. It's hard to give your business to someone who obviously doesn't care for...
Read moreI came to Ashijin because of their reviews. Their line is crazy! Wasn't even that long, but I still waited for almost an hour. Pretty exhausting, for the fact that I went there because I was HUNGRY. Anyway, after a whole hour of chilling with the door, there was FINALLY a seat open. The table I was seated at is located at a tiny little corner. There's two tables besides each other with about a foot gap in between for squeezing. Although they there was a little space to divide the tables it still felt like the people at the other table was dining with us. I guess this the ideal purpose of this restaurant is 'In-N-Out'. Our waitress was an older lady who doesn't speak English, which I didn't think was an issue since their menu is pretty simple. Well, upon seating us, she gave us teas and took forever to come back. I get that it was busy, but being tucked into the corner was a big problem because she forgot about us. The waitress came back after 25mins to take our order. We ordered our 2 bowls of udon &2sushi rolls. Our bowls of noodles finally arrives after 45minutes of watching other people eat. The sushi rolls didn't come, so I had to tell another waitress. She brought the rolls out right away. That fast! Yeah, so fast that it's the the sloppiest rolled up sushi I've ever seen in my life. Like the chef just slapped the dishes into the seaweed and rolled it on some rice.
The Ashijin Udon was really tasty. I'll give it 5 stars. I'd get it again if I do ever want udon. However, service is 1star. Sushi isn't that great. 2star. If anything, next time I would rather go next door to wasabi for their sushi instead.
This place is really small. For its high ratings in review, I'm surprised that the restaurant doesn't seem to want to expand. I can see them having great business it the place isn't so crowded that the waitresses can't even move around in.
HINT DON'T GO THERE HUNGRY! YOU'LL MOSY LIKELY LOSE YOUR APPETITE BEFORE GETTING YOUR FOOD. YOU WILL NEED THAT...
