During my time in Oakland, I went specifically hunting for a breakfast burrito. I grew up in the desert southwest, and though some say breakfast burritos were invented in California, I’ve yet to have better than what I’ve eaten in New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado, or Texas.
But I don’t live in those places now; I live in Washington state, where finding any kind of breakfast burrito, let alone a good one, is like hunting for the Holy Grail.
So I settled on the Guadalajara restaurant, because anywhere with 4.5 stars and thousands of reviews has got to be good, right?
I chose the traditional chorizo, rather than the “American style” sausage, and I asked for mine “mojado” or “wet,” which to a Southwesterner just sounds weird. (We say “smothered” when talking about salsa or chili poured over a burrito.)
The burrito was all right; the sauce, somehow weirdly sugary. Why sugary? Why would salsa ever be sugary? I’ll note that the server looked at me like I was mad when I asked that salsa be poured over my burrito, so perhaps that just isn’t done here, despite what I’ve heard?
Yet, having lived in the burrito-wasteland that is Washington for so long, anything is better than what Northwesterners pass for desayuno. I’m afraid, though, that the only way to get good Southwestern food of any kind, really, is to travel to...
Read moreWent here for lunch & had the steak super burrito. It was so huge...I could only eat about one-third of it in one setting. The chips & salsa are TO DIE FOR. You get very little with a to-go order so my co-worker and I each ordered an extra bag. She wasn't charged. I was. The horchata is pretty on point as well. The gentleman who initially rang us up was very knowledgeable about the dishes and advised us to try something new each time we visit. At the counter, there was a pound cake and the slices were huge. That may be on my radar next time I visit. The interior wasn't anything to write home about, but the aroma coming from the kitchen was overwhelming. It made me want to order whatever the chef was preparing at that very moment. Everything looked and smelled so good, it made it difficult for me to order because I already tend to be indecisive. You should check it out if you're in the area, and if you don't have much time to wait, there's a truck right out front!! How...
Read moreI have been coming here for many years. I generally yet a burrito from their truck in the parking lot. But some times I just want to go inside sit down and enjoy a nice meal, the ambiance of the restaurant. Occasionally a mariachi band will pass through and play to different tables. Since my life long favorite restaurant "Acapulco" in Alameda changed hands, I was forced to look elsewhere. Fortunately I didn't have to look far. The quality of the dishes coming out of the kitchen have been on point thus far. The prices are reasonable, and the portion sizes are very filling. Over all it a good value, and I have not come across any meal yet that didn't satisfy me or my companions. It is also a family friendly restaurant. They do a great deal of take out business, so at times the table service may suffer slightly, but the staff take care of you, so have a little patience, they are working their buts off. Please show them respect, and your appreciation when you tip...
