iLava Hawaiian Barbecue — Restaurant in Oakland

Going here is like a nostalgic trip to Havai'i to get heart and belly filling box lunch. The javai'ian vibes are playing, portions are plentiful, and the staff is friendly.

I ordered the lau lau because I love it and other Havai'ian' BBQ places no longer serve it anymore for some reason. iLava has it has it, and IT'S GOOD! It's not wrapped in a pound of leaves leaving more room for the good stuff. I really wanted to finish it, but there was crab rangoon and spam musubi which was equally as good. I had no guilt popping the crab rangoons into my face like a bag of chips. It took a lot of self control to make myself stop. Sadly, I still got a food coma.

The food was tasty but I was very underwhelmed by the portion size. Based on the reviews, I thought I'd be getting a decent amount of food especially cuz this spot is in the HOOD. But unfortunately, when the nice lady handed me the bag it was light as heck. I was like awwww damn it... very little food.

The two scoops of rice were like the equivalent to a proper scoop of rice. Mac salad was tasty but tiny.

If this place doesn't skimp it's easy a 5/5 but portion sizes are very small especially in the hood...maybe people are used to restaurants giving so little nowadays.....
