Look, all the food here is decent. Great variety, good lunch spot. They’re pretty much the only deli/lunch spot in a 5-7 block radius & they know it. You can get breakfast. The tuna salad’s good. The pre-packaged salads are freshly made & they’ve got beer/wine options for your after-work pick-up on the way home.
The pros: • They have some gluten-free sandwich bread. (Important) • The portions are generous. • The ppl that work here remember regulars names. (Which is great as I’ve been coming here for 7 years now)
The only negative about coming here is Oakland’s rent prices are probably so insane that Sierra has to charge you a tooth & nail for basic lunch items. A peanut butter & jelly sandwich on gluten-free bread costs me $9. A breakfast platter (2 scrambled eggs w/ cheese, bacon, gluten-free toast, potatoes) & an orange juice was like $24.
I’m from NYC, the land of bodegas aka corner stores where there’s a deli like this sometimes twice on the same block, & everything is super affordable. So even after living in Oakland for some time, I always shake my head leaving here feeling light in the wallet. It’s the only reason I can’t drop 5 stars. Because rent aside, if U live/work nearby, this is your go-to spot to get food in this relative food desert of a neighborhood so they can tack on a buck or two & you’ve gotta pony up.
But- for what you pay for, they really do try & hook it up with generous portions.

Read moreSierra Deli is an awesome little family-run corner deli. To start with, the food here is excellent and diverse - sandwiches, burgers, many different types of salads and fruit, a soup of the day, even a special of the day. My coworker introduced me to this place with their Vietnamese pork sandwich and it was fantastic. I'm trying to get to all sorts of items on their menu, but delicious favorites keep slowing the process exponentially as I pick up new favorites every time I order something new.
My whole office loves this place, and it would seem so does about every other office in Jack London Square from the line I encounter every time I come here.
Sierra also proves to be a community favorite with its convenience store section - a quiet corner of any last minute item you may need from an emergency supply of Midol to a tin of Spam.
Sierra Deli is a win. The line sucks, but understand that the line exists for a very good reason to stand in line for. The family that runs this place has an excellent thing going, and I wish them much success. I'll be coming back here...

When I stop at a place I always get two samples to try. This second one from Sierra Market and Deli in Oakland is a turkey avocado and cheddar sandwich. Again as the first did the bread was soft and delightful. May be one of my favorite things about this place. Portions were again laid out strategically like building blocks as the picture shows. The moisture that the avocado added was a perfect touch to the sandwich. Tomato was still a bit bitter. A touch of salt and pepper was added for my own personal liking. It helped add to the taste of the avocado and turkey. All in all this was a wonderful specimen. FOLLOW BRIDGESBANGERS ON INSTAGRAM FOR...
