I'm sad to write this review for Anthony's in Ocean City, a place that used to be a cherished family staple for years. In the past, we eagerly looked forward to their mouthwatering roast beef sandwiches and delicious burgers. However, ever since the change in ownership around 2020, our experiences have taken a sharp downturn, leaving us extremely disappointed.
First and foremost, the abrupt early closures without any prior notice have left us bewildered and frustrated. It's disheartening when you plan to indulge in your favorite sandwiches, only to find the doors closed before their usual closing time. The staff's attitude about this issue makes matters worse, as they seem to brush you off as if you're being unreasonable for trying to enjoy their food during their posted operating hours.
Another disappointing aspect of our recent visits is the apparent disdain for customers who are on vacation. It's perplexing to witness a shift in attitude towards visitors, considering that Ocean City thrives on tourism. Instead of a warm welcome, we have encountered complaints about tourists stopping by, which is perplexing given that their business likely relies heavily on seasonal visitors.
Perhaps most concerning was our experience during the height of the pandemic in 2020. Anthony's had anti-mask signs displayed throughout the premises, a stance that felt out of touch with the rest of the world's efforts to combat the virus and protect public health. It left us questioning their commitment to the safety of their patrons and the community.
The sad truth is that the once-beloved Anthony's has left a bad taste in our mouths. While we respect that businesses have the right to hold their own political beliefs, they should also prioritize offering a happy and welcoming atmosphere for all customers. It's disheartening to see a place that was once a highlight of our Ocean City trips now tarnished by these negative experiences.
In the end, we hope that Anthony's can rediscover the warmth and hospitality that initially made us fall in love with their food. Until then, we'll have to look elsewhere for our sandwich and burger cravings when we...
Read moreIt's not the same this year. :( For years we would go to Anthony's at least 2-3 times when we stay for a week in OC every July. It's the first place we would hit when we drive into Ocean City and the last place we'd go to before we went home (always bring a couple subs home!). We took an impromptu trip to OC and June and could not wait to go to Anthony's... even though we knew it was under different ownership.
This time it was awful. The new owners did not take any pointers from the old owners. They shouldn't even be able to call this place Anthony's. When we first got there, the place was dead and we were the only customers. We should have known then that something wasn't right because usually Anthony's would be busy from open to close.
Anyway, about the food... we always get the roast beef sandwiches. The bread is different and it gets soggy with the au jus. The au jus also used to be so good - this time it was bland and tasted like basic beef stock. They use red onions instead of yellow onions. THE WORST PART: the meat!!! We were all so grossed out. It used to melt in your mouth... this time it was so tough we couldn't even bite or chew through it. It was literally INEDIBLE. I ate about 1/4 of the bread and stuff, trying to chew up the roast beef, but I threw the rest out. It was like trying to eat tire rubber... no joke! My poor husband was super hungry so he just took the roast beef off and ate the soggy bread and toppings (the only edible part).
This year when we go down for a week with our huge family, a couple family members want to try it to see if it has improved since I was there in mid-June. I suggested they start by buying one sub and splitting it between them (or else they will be out a lot of money for a lot of inedible food). My guess is that they won't even be able to cut through the meat to even be able to split the sub.
Why did the new owners do this?! :( Super bad investment if they weren't going to uphold the real Anthony's quality. Old Anthony's was successful for a reason! You can't compromise on quality and expect the same...
Read more8/10/23- after reviewing their online menu, I arrived at Anthony's to order mozzarella sticks, chicken tenders, and onion rings. There was no one in line and I glanced at the menu on the counter. Right away I noticed mozzarella sticks was crossed out. Then I noticed the prices from their online menu didn't match the prices on the menu on the counter. I asked an employee about the discrepancy and was told I couldn't rely on the web menu- " everything is messed up." I ordered chicken tenders with fries and a large onion ring. After placing my order, 5 more customers came in. The counter person went over to the staffer who was working the grill and said in a very audible voice " I wish these people would stop coming in." ( It was 235pm... about 25 minutes before they were scheduled to close.) I got my order and checked my bag- I was given a small onion ring though I ordered a large. I brought this to the counter person's attention and he provided me an additional small onion ring. When I got home, I found the 5 chicken tenders were quite small- about 2.5 inches x 3 inches, and very thin. The breading sloughed off and exposed sliced pieces of chicken breast- not tenders. These were not tenders, but breast fritters. The onion rings had been pushed down into the cup they are served in- so none of the rings where intact- they were smashed together and just a clump of pieces. I've been hearing a positive buzz about Anthony's this season... but my experience was not...
