I'm sorry to have to give Browns only one star, because the food was pretty good and our waitress was lovely. However, I have to say, another server (possibly an owner?) was quite rude to us. She came over to refill our coffees, then seemed to notice that my husband was wearing a Bernie Sanders shirt. "What does your shirt say?!" she asked loudly. When my husband showed her, she gave an exaggerated eye roll, then abruptly walked away from us, shaking her head in disgust. Needless to say, we weren't offered any more refills of coffee. On our way out, she showed my father-in-law (a republican) photos of herself in a Trump t-shirt. Fine. Your politics can be whatever you want. This is supposed to be a free country, after all. However, I'm very surprised at a business owner behaving in such a juvenile manner. Good for her, I suppose, that her seasonal business is so great that she doesn't need to retain customers. Regardless, I have worked in customer service (and even managed a family owned restaurant in a resort town) for many years, and I would never dream of being so rude to a customer, who was doing nothing more than sitting there quietly, paying good money to support that establishment. I would certainly have expected a business owner (particularly one who appeared to be in her 70s) to have better sense and to behave like a mature adult. Good luck to them, I suppose. We certainly will not be eating...
Read moreChange is the one thing you can count on, unfortunately for Browns it's not in the right direction. Thanks Browns for the one experience that can ruin a vacation. For over 30 years I have been supporting your business, I remember the days when it was a little shack at the end of the boardwalk with a couple plastic tables and chairs out back. Congratulations on your success, but we won't be back. Going forward if you have rules about purchasing donuts to go after having a set down meal, you should post signage. Also, consider the business you turn away, if breakfast isn't offered at your donut window and donuts aren't offered after a meal to go, then you are making people choose between the two vs. capitalizing on getting more business. Perhaps more concerning is yearly decline in the quality of their "famous" donuts, as other reviewers have said they are just not the same. It's not the same Browns just like Manco and Manco is not the Mack and Manco of the past. In recent years my visit to Browns had been more about the nostalgia then a meal/donuts anymore (declining taste) but after today's experience the Browns I experience will be memories of the little shack with friendly faces and an eagerness to provide...
Read moreBrown’s is self sustaining, kind of like the sun. The attraction to their donuts coupled with the fact they are the only access to hot food if you’re on the beach anywhere around 1st St gives them the freedom to allow their service to fall to a level that was really disappointing today.
It is so difficult to find the time to get family together, and when the free time among the eight of us happens to coincide, it’s hard to imagine packing up and cutting your day short because you don’t have access to lunch. But 40 minutes after stepping into Browns and putting in a lunch order for four, I found myself regretting not bringing a packed lunch. After over 20 minutes, our server forgot to put our order in, and after three to four other take out orders at the bar had come and gone, she finally presented our food. But she was missing any form of an apology and to add insult to injury, two orders of fries.
If not for the fact I was not willing to pack it in and had no other option to feed everyone, I would have left my order like a bottle of beer with that last little sip left in it.
I’m sorry to say, our families will not be counting on Brown’s at any time...
