Went to Trilby's in Ocean Springs last night. Made reservations for 5:00 ( read somewhere that reservations were required) we were met at the door by multiple people. The setting and decorations were very nice tables and seating comfortable. It is a small restaurant. The hostess was wonderful she chatted with us when we arrived and when we left. Our waitress Kaitlyn did a good job although she seemed like she was having a bad day and was not very engaging. I did notice that other servers were much more engaging with their tables. The restaurant opens up at 5:00 so we were her first table. The menu is small, which they are very clear about on the website. They want to do small dishes very well instead of having large menus which we are more than happy with. Unfortunately the kitchen was out of the bacon-wrapped figs as an appetizer, they had ran out the night before which was disappointing as we had been thinking about those all day all day but we will definitely be returning to try them at a later time. The drinks were great. Husband was a little disappointed that our server said there were no side salads only large dinner salads but we actually saw what appeared to be a small side salad served to another table. I ordered the chicken piccata it was awesome! Chicken was crispy on the outside tender on the inside and season perfectly. My husband had the flounder bourre and remarked that although it had a lot of bones in it (it was pretty much a whole flounder) it was easily the best piece of fish he had eaten in a long time. I also had a bite and it was awesome. The fish was tender seasoned perfectly. The side dishes are ala cart and he ordered the creamed spinach. I easily could have eaten a giant bowl of that with some tortilla chips it was great. My only food critique which I did tell the hostess on the way out the door was our dessert. We ordered the Bananas Foster. This is something we have eaten frequently especially in New Orleans and usually when served the bananas are cooked and hot. This dish was raw bananas drizzled with the bananas foster sauce and ice cream. Don't get me wrong it was still tasty but it would have been much better had it been cooked. As I said I did mention this to the hostess and she seemed confused remarking that she thought it was a hot dessert as well. Keep in mind this is a priceyish restaurant but we felt it was well worth it and we will be returning especially to...
Read moreLet me tell you….I’ve heard a lot about Trilby’s but tonight, there was nowhere else my husband and I wanted to be!
We walked in the door hesitantly after I had made a call 10 minutes prior, PRAYING they had a reservation available for a night that hubby and I have been looking forward to for months! We walked in the door and checked in, and were warmly greeted and full on prepared to receive a coloring book (definitely a good tip for parents-they come prepared).
We walk to the table and you can most definitely tell this is going to be FANCY, we weren’t prepared! But we were sat and given a few moments to look at their menu, and we were off! Kristen was the absolute most superb waitress that we have had in a very long time! I wanted to try all the drinks and she was at the ready for when I said I’m craving something sweet! She brought a Dark and Stormy and an Espresso Martini-something I would never normally order but hey this is anniversary birthday night-going all out! Hubby said that his Old Fashioned had to be some of the best! Whenever I had a dumb question, Kristen was at the ready and just had the answer at the ready for me! We had ordered the special the Ponchartrain Grits for hubby (which btw, I do NOT eat grits personally but those were winners!) and Steak and frites-which the steak was cooked perfectly and I was so giddy and excited for the amazing plates in front of us.
THE BEST PART OF THE EVENING , besides the delightful conversation with, we believe Travis who checked in on our table, was Kristen at the ready for dessert and drink recommendations which were SPOT ON! They had a new port wine that she made sure would hit the spot along with this magnificent chocolate dessert, quite honestly I was so in love with it, I can NOT remember its name for the life of me, and hubby had the homemade pecan pie with some of the creamiest ice cream.
Let me tell you….this is the place to go for an amazing night out, the absolute best service-everyone dressed to the nines and you can tell they absolutely love what they do, and delicious-impeccable food! Thank you all for the wonderful night and Kristen, for this being one of your first nights back, thank you for making it the BEST EXPERIENCE! I no longer shall use the word fancy when talking about this restaurant-fine dining and perfection are...
Read moreMy fiancé got reservations at Trilby’s three weeks before Valentine’s and was not told it would solely be a Prix Fixe menu for $110 per person. When we arrived, the waitress explained we couldn’t order anything off the regular menu bc it was solely Prix Fixe. We would have been fine with this if we were told this ahead of time and given the menu options. This was especially frustrating because it was also Ash Wednesday, meaning we only had the one trout option for a meat less entree course. We began looking further at the costs of price compared to the regular menu, and it was way more! On the regular menu, if we had picked the Crab Au Gratin and Trout Trilby, including two sides and a dessert, the price would come out to around $75 a person. If you’re going to offer a Prix Fixe, at least make it make sense! Anyways, we felt it was a scam and left, not because it was too expensive but because of the concept of up charging their customers and not telling us it would be a set menu when the reservation was made.
We also watched another couple leave after voicing their concerns with the Prix Fixe menu. We were only there maybe 20 mins to finish our drinks we ordered (which they also got wrong, giving my fiancé a white wine instead of the red wine he ordered), so I can imagine there may have been more people to leave too.
We went to Morton’s Steakhouse and sat at the bar, where they had a Valentine’s dinner for TWO for $169. We ended up ordering off their regular menu, still ordering salads, two entrees, sides, and drinks, and it cost half of what we would have spent at Trilby’s.
We still plan to try trilbys again on a regular night, and I will say our waitress seemed really sweet! She even said she didn’t understand the cost of the Prix Fixe menu. For another comparison, I know a couple that went to Maison De Lu, and they were told it would be the Prix Fixe menu ahead of time, which was a four course dinner for $80 a person.
Just bad business at Trilbys in...
