Angelo's Burgers — Restaurant in Oceanside

Anyone who knows me, knows that I try to avoid fastfood as much as possible. I don’t eat at the mega-chain franchises. I DO however have a [cheat day] within my diet routine and that day is my time to chow-down on whatever I want... even “fast-food”.

I was invited to eat at Angelo’s Burgers in South Oceanside, Ca and I happily accepted the invitation. Angelo’s Burgers is a small-chain that is located on the Coast Highway in California and the branch I visited was at 2035 S Coast Hwy, at the border of Carlsbad.

At first glance, I thought that this place was just going to be a typical fast-food burger joint. I really didn’t feel like eating a burger though. Much to my surprise, Angelo’s Burger has a very extensive menu! Not only did they have your burgers, fries, shakes, beers, breakfast options, and salads; but they also had gyros and a plethora of their famous Mexican food, including massive burritos!

It was recommended that I get the carne asada fries and I also grabbed a gyro salad, a berry smoothie and some spiked-kombucha to wash it all down.

I was NOT disappointed! The food portions were huge and the pricing very reasonably inexpensive. The gyro meat was scrumptious and I like how they placed the dressing on the side so that I can choose the amount on it. The fries were gigantic and done well and I only needed to add a little hot sauce for some kick. The berry smoothie was just right and the kombucha was on-point!

Due to the Covid-19 outbreak, I truly appreciated that they practiced many safety rules here, including wearing face-masks, marked distances to wait and limited seating to control overcrowding. Everyone was safe.

My only criticism was the outside cleanliness of the establishment when I saw plenty of cobwebs and it looks like it needs a fresh coat of paint. But it’s definitely not the worst I’ve ever seen and I’m glad their bathrooms were clean.

First i went in later like 8:45pm... so I wasn't expecting anything too impressive... hungry yes.

Angelos; convenience of a drivethru, & option of a dining room.

This place was a place i would drive past my whole life, stopped in a couple times over the years... i used it more like a landmark...

But this time.... I really appreciated that they literally have everything under one roof!! Pancakes, burgers, burritos, shakes... the fries you guys... the fries hit the spot.

Cheeseburgers all around at our table one Chicago Dog & an order of Fries enough to serve as a side for two people or all five of us (2 adults 3 kids).

Chicago Dog gets a solid 3.5-4 as my husband recently went on a trip to Chicago & really had fresh memory to compare it to.

Cheeseburger has a unique patty taste definitely some in house seasoning going on which I appreciate. Shredded Lettuce was a plus (sets it apart from one giant piece of wet lettuce hanging off most burgers in the area). Bun is lovely, I would dare to say a bit more salt or cheese please but I know that's probably just my opinion coming through.

Star of the show was the ambiance (Oside from ceiling to the floor, you know the heart is pure oceanside) & the fries... thick fries you actually know came off a potato. They were 5 stars.

I’ve been going to Angelo’s Burgers South for a while now — they became my go-to spot after leaving another place I had been loyal to for five years. The food has always been solid, especially the gyros. But after a few great visits, I came home one day disappointed to find my gyro had only half the usual amount of meat.

I wasn’t looking to complain, but I did call to let them know I was disappointed, especially since this was my 12th visit. Without hesitation, they told me, “Don’t worry — we got you next time. Just let us know and ask for the person in charge.”

Today, I went back and let them know who I was. They remembered right away and said, “We got you.” Not only was my gyro hot, fresh, and made right — they surprised me by saying, “This one’s on us.”

I wasn’t expecting anything free — I just wanted what I paid for. But the way they handled it showed genuine care for their customers and pride in their food. That kind of service is rare, and it’s exactly why I’ll keep coming back.
