Driving between Fallingwater and Kentuk Knob, we found ourselves hungry on a rainy mid-day. Driving past colorful rubber rafts filled with determined white water adventurers, we pulled off on the side of the road and walked up the steps to this unassuming little food shop.
The interior of the bakery is very compact, with enough room to seat four in a row looking out the main window, and three stools huddle around a half-round bar table. There is a large tent on the outside, with three sets of large picnic tables that should easily fit 20 people or more.
The three girls behind the counter were nice and courteous. We placed our order for sandwiches and salads and waited. Unfortunately they were out of soup when we visited, because soup would have been grand on a cold rainy day.
It took quite a bit of time for the food to come out, but when they did, they did not disappoint.
The whole grain bread was sliced thick from an oval loaf, between which are several slices of the meat we ordered, cheese, and various toppings. We ordered our sandwiches with lettuce, cucumbers, pickles, and jalapeno peppers, along with mayo. On my first bite, I was immediately in love. The bread was the best with a crispy and crunchy crust that is to die for - as the bread is baked in house, it is indeed a fine bakery. I found my self pulling bits of the bread just so I could taste it alone. The rest of the ingredients were great as well, with good flavor and all very fresh. The jalapeno peppers were chopped so this ensured a more even flavor delivery, as opposed to sandwich shops that use pepper rounds that are hit or miss on each bite. This was definitely worth the wait.
The salads were similarly well composed, with ingredients that are fresh and well chopped. You don't get the typical irregular chunks or large leaves that make you feel like you are trying to shove down a baby octopus.
Eating here is not particularly cheap, about $8 for a heavenly sandwich that's well presented and would be acceptable at any casually hip eatery in a major city. It's a real surprise to find such a well balanced sandwich made with great ingredients and exceptionally good bread in such a far out place as this. This is definitely one of the best sandwiches I've ever had, right up there with the Vietnamese chicken sandwich (banh-mi) I experienced in Seattle.
So if you are in the area soaking up some architectural culture courtesy of Frank Lloyd Wright, swing by for some well done sandwiches courtesy of Ohiopyle Bakery and Sandwich Shoppe. Hopefully they'll have soup...
Read moreMy husband and I go to Ohiopyle often on Sundays and the Ohiopyle Sandwich shoppe is a regular stop for lunch. We always go there around noon and we beat the crowd otherwise it can get pretty busy. You order at a window and they will call your name when it's ready. The wait is not long but depends on how busy it easy; if it's busy and a lot of people and waiting or standing in line to order it might be difficult to hear when they call you. They serve breakfast sandwiches until 12. Then it's all "make your own sandwich". They have different kind of breads and spinach wrap and a lot of toppings and dressing. There are 3 or 4 picnic tables in the shade and one in the sun plus bar top seats. It's a common place for people with dogs (us included) but if your dog is anxious I'd avoid this place if crowded. It doesn't have a restroom on the premises. We truly love this place for the quality of their food and for the convenience and I recommend it for...
Read moreI walked up the stairs and one of the employees is smoking weed on her break…. She was in fact an employee, she was wearing the “uniform”. Um, I’m pretty sure you shouldn’t be getting high before returning to work!!! Then I walk in and simply ask if they bake bread since they are a bakery and sandwich shop…. Nope, they only bake muffins and a few other things. A bakery has big displays of pastries. So they are basically a sandwich place, and NOT a bakery! And the employee was so rude to me saying I’m not next. I just had a question, I wasn’t cutting anyone! I’m wondering if he was also high…. Also, I saw the meatball parm come out, the cheese wasn’t even melted. Also, look at the pizza in the review below mine, that doesn’t look...
