If the water is low do not go! We did this event family this past Friday. A few things we did not know. That it would take so long down the river. We did the pedal Park first nine miles to the meeting spot. The bikes for great Hall that was fantastic. Get into to Ducky's getting to the river a couple guys on kayaks gave us a warning that it's going to take us a long time to get down river. I was thinking 3 hours tops. Start down the river at 10 a.m. and did not get back to base until closer to 4:30 p.m. One spot that was so bad was passing an islands where you had a choice to go left or right. Would have been awesome to known that we should have gone right. After we all got the mood for the trip went down tremendously. Please please please ask the company you go with what the water level is. If it's low and slow moving do not go. It's just no fun. Also I would suggest bringing sunscreen and some water and food. I think the rafting companies in this area really need to prepare families for these events better. Twilight the New River Gorge earlier that several people warned us about not having enough information when departing from Ohiopyle. So I hope this list helps you to prepare if you do the journey. I suggest your own cooler with three bottles of water for each, and a snack. Also bring extra sunscreen rated at least 50. You all should put it on a couple times if it's going to be a long. People we passed on the river and us we're suffering from severe sun expostion. Reminder we only expected to be there at tops 3 hours. The first couple people we met at the we're super nice. When I told the lady behind the counter please let other people know make it to the island to go right it was like I kicked her cat. Would have been a great experience if the water was higher. If it's low do not go it's...
Read moreThis was our family's first whitewater rafting adventure and we had a blast!! Our tour guide, Annika, was very professional, highly knowledgeable, precise in her expertise in detailing very thorough instructions with a great sense of humor to ease our anxiousness prior to hitting the rapids. Our tour guide in our raft, Ahna (sp?), was incredible!! She was also highly knowledgeable, was extremely respectful & friendly as she communicated with us the entire 7.5 miles down the Yough. Ahna was constantly explaining the history of the river, all the while, guiding our raft with ease through some exciting rapids, maneuvering us through rocks and provided a great deal of fun, not only for us adults, but also for our 12 year old son & his friend. The staff at Ohiopyle made our reservation a breeze and the check-in process was quick & easy (I'd recommend checking in on-line prior to arriving). The amenities such as the gift shop, (they sell water shoes, glasses straps, etc. - cheap! in case you forgot something), bathrooms & locker rooms were clean and easily accessible. From the moment of our first paddle stroke, the nice lunch provided as we watched other rafters navigate the rapids, our adventure with Ahna commanding us when and how to paddle for us to enjoy a thrilling, safe adventure was incredible to say the least. We highly recommend the Lower Yough with a professional, fun tour guide as we did - because we will back again....and looking forward to Anika and Ahna being our guides. We enjoyed a nice, economical dinner and ice cream to complete our trip 'in town'. If you're up for an exciting & safe rafting adventure make sure Ohiopyle is on your...
Read moreTo start, this is my 4th time on the river and my first with this group First off, we went on a day where water levels were clearly low. Rocks and little bumps along the way, as well as a slower float is to be expected. I had booked an unguided raft. I was part of a group of 6 rafts. There were 2 other rafts with guides, and a family who CLEARLY booked wrong (to their own admission)and expected a guide, but didn’t get one. This ruined the experience for everyone else. My raft, along with 2 others, would clear rapids and then get stuck sitting at the bottom waiting for everyone else, baking in the sun and not moving. I get we are part of a “team” as we raft, but it got to the point where our tour guides let TWO OTHER RAFTING GROUPS (who entered the river hours after us) PASS US BY. This was like a punishment to the competent rafters. Not saying we should’ve gone ahead on our own, but something needs to change bc this river should never take 5.5 hours to complete. We should’ve been allowed to go ahead with one of the escorts, as there were rafts where acting like it was their first time in the water and their slow incompetence ruined the trip for every other rafter there Additionally you could tell the guides were getting slightly annoyed, and weren’t communicating with each other well let alone us when it came to where to pull off and when to Start rapid decent. We got scolded to Riley even tho another guide had clearly given us the ok. So we constantly waited 20 mins before being able to move, And then got yelled at. All in all a...
