Mystic Market South — Restaurant in Old Saybrook

This was a place that was 4 stars. Then this happened that I lost all respect for this place. I have many allergies and sometimes hard to eat. Many times I have come in and gotten the same thing every time with one exception please try no onions. A dozen times they have accommodated me no problem. A woman and a man do it literally all the time no problem. Today they refused and said they have never done this for me. Its the only sandwich I get made into a salad. The only one I can eat comfortably. They refused to let me have the salad/ sandwich. Not "We will try or sure no problem like usual or we can put the squash concoction on the side. Just a flat out NO and lied they have NEVER done this. Was I in the twilight zone. JUST BOGGLES MY MIND. WHAT HAPPENED TO THE CUSTOMER SERVICE. I WAS A loyal customer, someone who tells people to eat here. These are when it was four stars Decided to try lunch this time. Went over to the deli section and chose a turkey sandwich. It had roasted butternut squash, turkey,cheddar and cranberry mayo, no onions. Wow delish on sourdough bread and my boyfriend got a grinder and it was huge. The bread is crusty and just so good. After we got a bakery treat and we both had smiles this time. Okay okay I liked that turkey butternut squash concoction sandwich I came back again for it. Super yummy. This time I got it as a grinder. To me this place is best for the grinders or sandwiches not their lack of fresh dessert. Okay something about this concoction with turkey and butternut squash no onions. Super yummy. Got it in a salad version minus bread....

I originally gave this place a 5 star review a few years ago but after today I am changing it. Over the years the service has always been a bit spotty, mainly because they mostly employ young stoners that are quirky which isn't the worst thing in the world, but incompentce should be expected, something always gets messed up.

Today we ordered a sandwich and it was made wrong (they covered it in onions, no onions were asked for), so I went back in and asked for them to remake it, no apology, they remade it wrong again, so I went back in again and asked what was going on. They brought the sandwich back and explained they did something wrong and I asked if they remade the sandwich or just scraped the onions off...which they tried to fool me with and so I asked for them to remake it one last time. Which they did but it was made haphazard and looked like they tried to salvage the old sandwich and used the same bread. They don't mind asking for a tip every order but when they mess things up they will do the bare minimum just to get you out the door. This place is expensive and not the only sandwich game in the area, go to Simons in Chester or Olive Oyls in Essex, you won't get charged an arm and a leg for a sandwich and it will...

Have eaten here 8 times over the last two months. Want to become a regular customer because quality of food is very good to excellent, always fresh, and the workers do a great job preparing it. Will probably not become a regular customer because they are often out of publicized menu items. About half the time they “are out of” my first and second choice off their menu board. Prices are not cheap enough to have to accept my 3rd or 4th choice off the menu, so I’ve walked out a couple times. Workers don’t seem surprised or apologetic when menu items aren’t available which means it’s probably the norm. Management needs to wake up and order/allocate sufficient food to be prepped each day so as not to disappoint and turn away customers - which is not good for business.
