The restaurant is ideally placed and the service was great! Bread and the cheese spread however were the only highlights of food recieved. The chips and cheese dip were fine, tortilla chips were soft like they’d been cooked a couple of days prior and had an old grease taste to them. When we got our dinner it was disappointing. My shrimp blt was soggy (probably from the grape tomatoes, which usually aren’t on blts) the shrimp was cut in half (probably to accommodate the fact that it would be pressed, so I get that) and from frozen. As soon as it touched my mouth, no seasoning, lifeless in color and no taste of the sea, I knew straight away it was from frozen and outside of US. The rest of the blt was OK, there’s a creole sauce that tastes like nothing they put on the side (probably bc of the soggy factor). Fries were loaded in oil and room temp. Probably cooked them in again old oil and before mains were ready. My date that came with me got a seafood platter that consisted of fried shrimp, fish, oysters, and fries. Same issue, oil was old the shrimp for him seemed fresher and from US, the oysters were bad. We like oysters, even LOVE them, but I had one bite and told him to not eat any more because they were OFF. We left our plates with more than half of the food left (which I was surprised, because it was hard to eat), I believe the owner did come by asking if we wanted to take any home we said no and she asked again surprised with so much food left and again we replied no with an uncomfortable look. I think she knew just from our reaction that it was bad, but didn’t want to pry. Last night my boyfriend woke up throwing up profusely, and I know tmi, but we both know without a doubt it was the oysters. I wasn’t going to leave a review bc I’m not that kind of person to be angry with local business, but this really was unacceptable. Service again was great and I understand they’re in their off season, but no excuse to let food quality get this bad. And the restaurant itself is fading. The mural on the wall was beautiful, but even at our booth there were bits of wall exposed from I guess renovating or the booth detached. The table cloth lining was wet and had an odor coming off it, the downstairs bathroom was dirty, no toilet paper, and the sink was filthy. The restaurant at around 7pm had maybe 6-8 covers. There were plenty of staff. The host was standing at the front of house, when there could be a lot of things to be done (like the bathroom, menus be wiped, or tables be bussed) the owner was working very hard to get tables cleared. Where this restaurant is placed is ideal for foot traffic and it really is a quaint place, but it needs some work and especially the food. My suggestion to the owners cut back on the menu, focus on fresher foods, and delegate better with staff. My suggestion to diners, prices are reasonable, but overall food and atmosphere are lacking. Read moreI would have never chosen this place on my own but it was on a recommendation list mentioning that the grouper was great - and it was. Upon walking in there are two sides of the place - the bar side with music playing and the bistro side with a stage and they had a local comedic musician doing a set. The "hostess" who did the greet&seat seemed like a stressed out manager who was annoyed and bothered that we were there. I was set on the grouper but I couldn't eat the crab nor the mushrooms - my waiter said I could customize whatever I wanted however I wanted like an alacarte menu. Everything sounded so good so I finally settled on the Pecan Chicken meal and added grouper, knowing I'd have leftovers but it just seemed too interesting to pass up. When they brought out the meal, the grouper was a very small piece but as the waiter set it down he said this piece is too small I'm gonna bring you another one. The first one was delicious - the second was even bigger and even more delicious! The chicken was a huge piece - pounded out flat, crusted in candied pecans then fried and cut in half. The breading fell off but it was still delicious! I usually love the side dishes more than meats at most places but surprisingly not here. The sides weren't BAD but not nearly as good as the proteins. The Gouda mashed potatoes were heavy, the shaved brussels were okay, I would have preferred halved or quarters though. My mom had the 12.99 prime rib special the meat again was the star - the mashed potatoes were plain and dry. The green beans were seasoned well but severely overcooked though still delicious. My dad had the fried shrimp platter - they werent jumbo shrimp as advertised but they were medium and a lot of them. The fries are battered then fried. Oh and we started with the fried green tomatoes with blackened shrimp and roulade - the roulade and blackened completely masked the flavor and beauty of the tomatoes which was disappointing though it tasted good. The shrimp were a bit soft almost mushy though. The bread and spread were thoroughly addicting and unique and one of my favorite parts. Oh they also have 3 different quarter cocktails that are 25 cents for the first one then $8 for any following. They were fairly basic (Cosmo, Sunset, Blue Wave) but perfectly decent in quality and selection for just a quarter. The rest of the food is quite pricey to make up for them. 3.5% service fee for credit card processing (which tbh I thought was illegal or against most processor contract agreements but okay. It was a $110 night for 3 people. Couldn't afford to eat here as a local on a regular basis but it was nice...
Read moreWhile the food was very good, the service lacked. Perhaps it was because of where they decided to seat us, (our party of eight). We had two children age 10 and 11 with us, so I didn't quite understand went they chose to seat us in the barroom, rather than the main dining room.
They had plenty of tables open in the dining room to which would accommodate our party of eight comfortably, so we were a bit perplexed by why they chose to seat us by the pool table and right next to the bar.
It wasn't that the server was intentionally neglecting us, it was because he couldn't tend bar and wait tables at the same time. The bartender was our server, and he had his hands full by fully tending to his patrons at the bar, which is understandable.
Our food took a really long time to come out and he was not available to even get his attention, as he was swamped at the bar.
The kids were out of place there and it was awkward when they decided to play pool at the pool table that was sitting right next to us, as they didn't even know how to play. It musst have been awkward for the adults sitting at the bar as well, as having to watch their posts and q's due to having children shooting pool right behind them.
These kids were not my own, but were the children of our friends who were with us and in our party, so it wasn't my place to tell and allow them whether or not to play pool while we were sitting there for so long waiting for our food and service.
I can't blame the parents for allowing them to do so, as that's a long time for kids to have and sit, when there seemed to be a recreational activity that they could partake in, while waiting so long for the food to arrive.
I blame the hostess who made the decision to sit us where she sat us. It's inappropriate to seat anyone who has children with them at a table in a barroom, when there was plenty of room to seat us in the main dining room. It was poor judgement on their part to do this.
I would definitely go back again, as the dungeons crab was fantastic and the steak my husband had, was top notch. I would just suggest that you train your hostesses to make wise decisions before placing parties with children in an area which was...
