Fresh Oysters on the Half Shell is served with horseradish, house made cocktail sauce, fresh lemon, and saltine crackers. The gulf coast has great oyster beds making the oysters slightly briny and sweet with a creamy texture and flavor. I love them just out of the shell, but I also like them with a dab of cocktail sauce and horseradish.
Crab Claw Basket is hand battered and lightly fried crab claws served with their signature shrimp slaw, two hushpuppies, one corn fritter, and French fries. This is a dish I really wanted my dad to try since we can’t get these types of crabs on the west coast or Hawaii. The claws are lightly fried so that the crab meat maintains its sweetness. I like them plain or with a quick dunk into the cocktail sauce. If you know how to eat artichoke leaves, the same technique works with these crab claws. I fell in love with this dish on my first visit to Orange Beach and now I get it every time I am here.
Low Country Boil for Two is a platter of seasoned peel n’ eat steamed shrimp piled high with Conecuh sausage, new potatoes, corn, and served with their signature shrimp slaw. There is nothing better than a low country boil! It contains everything for a great meal – perfectly steamed shrimp, juicy sausage, starchy potatoes, and sweet corn. Another seafood great is gulf shrimp. It is meaty and flavorful. The shrimp we have on the west coast is a bit bland and not very exciting. This is another food I fell in love with on my first visit and must always order it when I see it on the menu.
Blackened Redfish topped with Seafood Cream Sauce is just what the name implies served on a bed of rice. We had not seen redfish on a menu before. I looked it up and it is a type of red snapper, but unlike any red snapper we have ever encountered. It has a semi-firm texture and is one of the most flavorful fish we have ever had. On the west coast, red snapper is a bottom of the bucket fish with bland flavor and sometimes fishy aroma. It almost seems that the seafood in the gulf coast are happier and tastier than the pacific coast. After the first bite, my dad was addicted to redfish. The seafood cream sauce is amazing! It would also be great on pasta, biscuits, etc.
Key Lime Pie is always a great end to a seafood meal. Plus, being only 3 miles from the Florida border, it was just fitting. It has a luscious texture with that key lime flavor I yearn for, not too sour and not too sweet. The graham cracker crust was perfect, thick enough for texture and allowing the key lime flavor to...
Read moreAfter driving all day we wanted someplace we were kind of familiar with and since we ate here last year and liked it well it won. We did discover that with a large group the best time to come on a Friday evening is about 5:30 no fuss, no muss just how many in your party & how many kids menus will you need. It was great, nice young gentleman said follow me and away we went. After 10hr drive that is exactly what the Dr ordered plus an Alabama Sunrise! (see picture) Next came our waitress so dang sweet and very attentive our water glasses or kids drinks never went empty and with my family that is a big deal. We ordered 2 appetizers for the table fried pickles (yea i know can get those any where in Texas but wife & daughter love them) & seafood queso that came with baked pita chips. Both were plentiful enough to make couple trips around the table and very flavorful. The fried pickles are the sliced chips not wedges and the breading is very crisp & light not over seasoned or heavy lets the pickle taste come through. Now my favorite was the seafood queso with crawfish & crabmeat mixed in had just enough of a little cajun bite but not overwhelming that I had to bogart the majority of it. Unfortunately that is where all the goodness ended. While or entrees were alright we had high aspiration from previous year. My wife ordered the crab came plater w/side of cheesy grits while the crab cakes were ok the grits not so much lacked flavor and kind of lumpy, she adds sankt, pepper and a little hot sauce just to give it something very disappointing. I ordered the blanked red fish topped with a seafood cream sauce on top of yellow rice. The cream sauce had goo amount of crawfish and crab in it and was alright in the flavor department and it needed to be the red fish was WAY over cooked and very dry so you needed to make sure cream sauce was on every bite. My brother in law had a catfish Po Boy while it was alright it was not on authentic NOLA type po-boy roll, you know the one fresh chewy and stick to the roof of your mouth. He did say the catfish had a good flavor and was not over breaded. After contemplating the many desserts we decided no, and would settle for some "over priced" ice cream at Kaydens Ice Cream & Candy Shoppe. ..but that is another review for another day. Maybe the cook was off today or just having a bad day it has been probably a long summer for them so we might give another try before heading back to great state of Texas at the end of...
Read moreThis is a review for people who can taste. Some people are happy with food, period. Most of thw time that is me. I can tell things are bad but you are trying. I leave it alone. Maybe I came on a bad day. So I'm guessing you can imagine how we felt if we were so inclined to post here....
Food took over an hour and they were NOT busy when we arrived. As a matter of fact most of the indoor seating was available.
Sever was pleasant and kept drinks full. Unfortunately we can't rate him high because the food took over an hour to arrive. Never were we told why or apologized to or anything.
So let's talk food. 6 people ages 9 - 64.
AYCE steamed shrimp came out cold. Maybe that is how they intended it I thought. Nope the corn was so dry and cold I couldn't even bite it followed by bland flavorless boiled potatoes that were a sticky chewy disappointment. The shrimp vosilated between the shells won't come off to perfect. With droves of seasoning then none.
AYCE popcorn shrimp served hot. Unfortunately it tasted like the shrimp had been left in water to unthaw and taken on too much while someone washed dishes above them. It was so bad my son couldn't eat it. He oppted for a 2nd helping hoping to be salvaged from this popcorn shrimp he'll. In great anticipation the hot shrimp arrive. Only to have been seasoned with extra soap. Inedible. Good thing my 9 year old can't taste. She didn't seem to mind.
Shrimp and chicken tender basket served lukewarm. Unfortunately the tenders were lackluster and the shrimp was bland. My son said and I quote, "the highlight of this meal was the fries and they are not that great either"
Whitefish and grouper basket served reaching for lukewarm. My husband opinion, "It was fine, I guess" Very underseasoned.
Crab leg cluster our 9 year old. Poor child had to enjoy shredded crab. Maybe we should have known better with onle the cluster on the menu.
Fried flounder served hot. Average. Nothing bad to say instead she was the first to eat the Cole slaw which was a sweet delightful moment in a tired and dismal meal.
Overall we gave it 2 stars because the server was nice and a few elements were 3 stars. If I could do it again I wouldn't. It was priced like everyone else and far worse. Or maybe this is good for Gulf Shores. I think not. But considering your 4.1 stars out of thousands of reviews I'd be more mindful of those reviews lacking any...
