In a time when restaurants are finding ways to save themselves selves, survive till their next economic advancement. Their are chefs who get lost on this path. Some forget where or what brought them to where they are. To this point this, place this moment in time. Mrs Potato is not one of these Chef Rafaela cuts,no corners ever. We were asked to lunch after a shooting competition, and I am sure glad we were. I am in no way even a decent beginning student in Brazilian linguistics. As a matter of fact, I'm quite the butcher of such a beautiful language. However, when my wife or our friend mentions the words Brasil, or food or eat, I seem to understand perfecto. So I picked up on this and got my galloping Gaucho boots on to head to my next favorite, Churrascaria. Well, that being said, we arrived at Mrs Potato restaurant, and we went in. We are seated by one of the best servers.... no, she was not just a server but more of an amazing attendant. On the spot gracious to a fault humble and a stellar personality to boot. Rafaela, not to be confused with the chef, who we are still going back to in a bit. Rafaela, our amazing attendant, took our order for our liquid libations. She also asked if there were any aperitivos that we would like to try. I chose the Parmesan Truffle Fries they were one of the best fry renditions I have ever eaten. At this point, Chef Rafaela comes in and stops at our table, greets the gentleman who brought us in, then greets all of us as if she had known us since childhood. Now, this is where I like to test chefs cooks... and others who have worn my shoes, so to speak. Amazing Attendant Rafaela is asking what I would prefer all of the Brasileiros have ordered, and spout off my typical reply, I will have what the chef chooses for me. At this point, I'm expecting Chef Rafaela to suggest the most expensive meal as others have done in the past. However, chef Rafaela replies, "You would probably like a roasti that is what Guy Fieri liked when he came to visit... I said if that is what you think I should have. When the food came out, we all received our dishes. One had gotten feijoada. Another had gotten picanha. I received this greatly detailed hash brown Rosti carne seca. Which Chef Rafaela hand cures herself, it was so delightful. I can't wait to go back and let her choose my next dish. Towards the end of our meal out pops Chef Rafaela "so how did you like it" After I told her my thoughts and I told her I was a chef in a prior life. For the record, I was successful as a pit master and chef. She sat, and we discussed all of the joys and sorrows of the industry. We discussed how the current trends in restaurants are sadly spiraling. And what makes a great restaurant. See, for me, many of us, as patrons, miss what dining should be. Is it to eat ... sure... is it to drink. Maybe..... is it to fill a gap. Whatever your answer may be. For me, it is supposed to be an experience. As I spoke to Chef Rafaela, I summed it up in a Disney cartoon Ratatouille. When the critic gets drawn back to his childhood and remembers his mother cooking him this dish. we look from behind our protected fish bowl window to the service floor. We never know who is just eating dining or having an experience. In today's world we need more Mrs Potato we need this connection to our food. This chef does not cut corners she takes that pride of ownership to heart, it is her soul this restaurant is her and you can tell it from food to staff it has been my best one on one conversation with a great Chef. Not all of us get the chance to be GUY, Bobby, Simon,or Ramsey. But our heart, soul, and emotions go into every dish inspired enough to be given to the patrons. Thank you, CHEF Sadly, I was wrapped up in my experience and for got to photograph the dishes, so I am using other...
Read moreTo start, this restaurant gets a 4⭐ pretty much across the board, but even that is shaky rating. It's good, but needs to shave some items off the menu, or at least revamp the flavor of a few things to make the food really "pop" in all categories.
Food was ultimately hit or miss. The parts that were good ended up shining a little bit more than they realistically should have. However, that's because the items that weren't so good were really not enjoyable by anyone in the party.
We ordered the cheese balls appetizer, two kids meals (crusted chicken with broccoli, and a basket of fries for them to share), a chicken, bacon & ranch rosti, a duo of empanadas (one chicken, one shrimp), gnocchi with marinara, and a broccoli & cheddar rosti. Among those items, the most enjoyable were the two rostis and, shamefully, the french fries. The cheese balls had minimal flavor to them on the inside, so it simply tasted like bland cheese with breading on the outside. The children's chicken was somewhat cold, yet edible; they didn't mind it themselves. The empanadas were given an, "I'll eat these, but not exactly with enthusiasm," sort of response. The gnocchi was also given a "mediocre" sort of response; they appeared to be a little hard from being overcooked, but the marinara was noted as being somewhat tasty. And finally, the two rostis were agreed upon as the best items we all tried, and were actually served piping hot! However, the catch is it's not actually the interior that caught our taste buds-- it was the actual potato itself. Given the name of the restaurant, that shouldn't be a surprise, however, we left somewhat disappointed that we effectively ordered "okay" food with what effectively simply ended up being amazing hash browns.
Service was nice, more than passable, but not exceptional in any particular way. It's disappointing that this restaurant is located on the corner of a shopping strip, tucked away and hidden from people stopping by Publix to do their shopping. This restaurant had potential, but when it came time to swing, Mrs. Potato struck a foul ball. The silver lining here is it wasn't a strike, therefore Mrs. Potato is more than capable of improving itself and making a home run. There simply need to be some elevations in flavor across the board to make it stand out from other typical restaurant fair...
Read moreMy fiancee , her parents and I went to Mrs. Potato today for lunch. My fiancee's family is of Swiss decent and roshtis are a favorite traditional dish of theirs. We had heard of Mrs. Potato a while back and then saw an episode of triple D and it sealed the deal, we had to try it. Let me off by saying, if you like potato's especially of the hash brown variety, then this place is a must try.
We started off by getting some appetizers. We got the fried Yuca, the chicken drops, cheese balls and cod fish fritters. The fried Yuca was delicious , especially with the garlic sauce. The cheese balls, which were my favorite as well as my fiance's dad's favorite, they are fried balls with light breading , filled with melted cheese. The chicken drops were my fiancee and her mom's favorite, these were like a lighter version of Papa rellena , but filled with shredded chicken. The cod fish fritters were delicious and not to salty.
For Main course , we each got a roshti. I got the chicken catipury roshti( catipury is very similar to cream cheese) was fantastic , the hash browns crisp, and the filling which was shredded chicken mixed with catipury was delicious .the catipury topping makes it look quite delectable. My fiancee had the chili cheese roshti , which was a delicious mix of chili and cheddar cheese filling , again with delicious crisp hashbrowns. My fiance's dad got the Philly cheese steak roshti which was delicious filling , the we agreed it could use more cheese . My fiance's mom got a veggie roshti, with cheddar cheese and catipury topping. She said the cheddar cheese blended well with the veggies and the catipury was a great topping. Over all we all had a wonderful experience and cannot...
