I tend to enjoy American Chinese food. It can have a wide variety of flavors. I also love the fact that it can be somewhat healthy, as long as the dish has veggies. I am very particular about this type of cuisine, and there are a few favorites I will judge a place by. If those go well, then I’m more likely to try more of the offerings. First, the Hot and Sour soup must be good. Theirs is excellent! Perfectly balanced, packed with delicate egg, bamboo strips, mushrooms, and tofu, in a velvety and not too thick broth. Their egg rolls were a pleasant surprise! The wrap isn’t too thick. It isn’t a fried spring roll, but the wrapper isn’t as thick as I’m used to. It has a pleasant flavor, perfectly crisp texture, and it’s full of wonderfully seasoned meat and cabbage. I love when a place’s house made hot mustard makes me cry. Theirs had me with tears of joy streaming down my cheeks! I hadn’t seen chicken noodle soup on a Chinese menu before, so thought I’d give that a shot. It was a colder day, and WOW! This delicate and lightly flavored chicken broth was packed with wonderfully firm egg noodles and strips of chicken breast. After all these pleasant experiences I wanted to try something a little different. They have roasted duck available sometimes. It is not on their online menu but if you call, sometimes it’s available. I got a 1/2 roasted duck. It is served with steamed white rice a cup of duck jus. It isn’t served hot. It is cut but it will have bones. I have had a lot of duck, both Chinese and American versions. Not having it piping hot isn’t a deal breaker for me. It can be easily warmed up in the oven. This duck was some of the most flavorful I’ve ever had! It is truly spectacular! While it isn’t a first date food, you’ll be licking your fingers a fair amount, it is a dish I can’t recommend enough! All of the other dishes I’ve tried so far have been excellent and look forward to continuing my deep dive into their menu. Thrilled to have this place in our...
Read moreYou don’t just eat at China Chef in Overland Park you heal a little. You breathe a little deeper. You laugh between bites, look at your wife across the table, and think, "Yeah. this is one of those good moments life gives you." We’ve been coming here for years. Through job changes, anniversaries, long weeks and short weekends. And every single time, this place shows up like an old friend the kind that doesn’t need a fancy entrance, just walks in, sits next to you, and says, “Hey. Let’s eat. You’ve had enough of the world today.” The dumplings are delicious and generous, like it was cooked by someone who knows what comfort tastes like. The lo mein wraps around your soul, not just your fork. And the crab rangoons ohhh, don’t even get me started. It’s like a warm blanket, a soft rain on a Sunday, your grandma’s voice in a bowl. The service? So fast and kind, you start wondering if you stumbled into a parallel universe where people still look you in the eyes and care. The prices? Humble. Honest. Grateful. The portions? Let’s just say they’re not skimping on love. And that staff, they smile at you like you’re part of something. Because you are. You’re part of the China Chef family, whether it’s your first time or your 400th. They don’t just cook food here. They serve peace, generosity, and a little reminder that life can still be beautiful. In a world that’s always rushing, always screaming for your attention, this place whispers, “Sit down. Be still. You’re safe here.” China Chef isn’t just one of the best Chinese restaurants in Kansas City. It’s a place for the soul. A destination, yes but more than that, a tradition of togetherness for anyone lucky enough to walk...
Read moreI can only say: Wow.
I had almost forgotten what good American Chinese food tasted like.
Not that the majority of American Chinese food is bad, but it's regular, run-of-the-mill stuff, you know? Everything kind of blends together into a mild brown sauce of overcooked vegetables and questionable meat cuts. It's still a treasure of Chinese American food, but it's not the Crown Jewel that I have sought.
Our order tonight.went beyond all my expectations.
We ordered four entrees; all of them were piping hot, delicious, saucy, and meaty (well, except the General Tso's Shrimp, which was shrimpy, but not really, because the donut-fried shrimp were gigantic).
The fried rice was dark and complex, rather than just the token splash of Kikkoman's over greasy white rice.
The broccoli in our stir-fries was a clear standout. It was actually freshly stir-fried. It was bright and crunchy; simply delightful.
We asked for extra mustard, no extra plastic, no flatware. We received our order in a box, generously sourced with mustard packets, but also freshly prepared (and tear-jerkingly hot) mustard in a takeout condiment container. It's those little details, like Van Halen's brown M&M clause, that bring me joy.
I don't know if China Chef is putting their best foot forward because they just opened or the current restaurant climate is harsh, but I don't care.
Their food caused a brief Ratatouille moment for me and I look forward to the next time I can...
