We have been here three times the past 2 months. We have made plenty of rounds around town at different sushi joints. Sushi mido, sushi uni, blue sushi, ra sushi, oishi sushi etc. But Sam’s has hands down been the freshest and most affordable sushi we have found. The waitress we have had has always been super friendly and very kind to our children. Our kids like straight nigiri tuna, and when we told her she got them the same amount, but just sliced a little thinner so it was easier for them to handle with chopsticks. Be prepared that they do not serve fountain drinks, but everything is canned or bottled. No free tap water, this doesn’t bother us at all because prices are affordable. Their lunch special is a must try. My husband got the lunch special with the eel + avocado (their eel is like butter, it’s amazing) and tuna + avocado, while I got the sexy tuna and crazy ninja roll. My husband’s favorite after 3 visits is now the crazy ninja roll and mine is definitely the sexy tuna roll. They served us miso soup at no charge and honestly I don’t usually like miso soup but theirs is tasty and it seems homemade and not packaged. They include seaweed as well, which is a major plus. Most places just give you a couple green onions without any tofu, or seaweed. It’s definitely a hidden gem in OP and always clean inside. People love to get to-go orders, that’s mostly what we see but service is great if you want to sit down. Skip other places in town and give...
Read moreI hate to write a less than positive review, but in this case it's necessary. We eat sushi often and after seeing Sam's with a 4.9 rating and over 260 reviews, we decided to give it a try. The place was nearly empty on a Friday night and had only a few tables scattered round a fairly large area. I figured they must do a brisk carry out business, so we stayed even though alcohol was not offered. That was a mistake.
The sushi selection was limited, which I thought might be good if the volume of customers was low - maybe the few selections offered would be good and fresh.
I ordered maguro (tuna) and super-white tuna and a Philadelphia roll with salad and edamame. Well, the salad was fine, the edamame was small and under-cooked. The maguro (tuna) was literally bright pink, but it smelled okay. Pretty much tasteless. The super-white tuna was tasteless and very tough. The salmon in the Philadelphia roll was brown.
My wife had a salad, a Philadelphia roll and crab Rangoon. The crab Rangoon was different. The filling was similar to other places, but it was fried in a triangular shell (kind of thick pastry) versus a wonton.
I absolutely can't imagine how this place has received so many five-star reviews unless they were purchased (there are Facebook pages that have people who...
Read moreThis is a GEM to find in the Overland Park area. I found this place a couple months ago and I am so happy to have found it. My co-workers and I eat here at least once a week sometimes twice. We do their Hibachi Steak Lunch. It comes with the Best hibachi rice. I am Asian so I usually just do white rice with everything but their hibachi rice is so amazing that i always get it instead. The lunch comes with a fresh salad with ginger dressing and their onion soup. For 10 dollars, its real food non processed food and it's delicious. We also love their Spicy Kani salad (it's their version of spicy crab salad but they put in on a bed of greens and theirs in in a spicy mayo sauce. (DELICIOUS) Sushi is fresh and great but what makes this place so special, is the owners. She is so Happy and so Friendly and I believe how you she interacts with people is another reason they come back :-) If you haven't tried it yet, go grab lunch there....
