My wife and I have been to a hibachi grill before on the plaza and intended on returning to that restaurant, but according to my research, the owners of that particular grill had retired and closed down. So I did my research and discovered Toro in Overland Park with rave reviews.
It was my oldest daughter's 18th birthday and so for this special occasion we surprised her with a special hibachi dinner, which none of my 3 children have experienced.
We sat down, the server took our order, brought us our drinks, was served an onion soup which was fantastic, then a salad with creamy garlic dressing which was awesome and then our hibachi chef came out with his cart of food, spices and sauces and started grilling the vegetables. I don't want to spoil your experience coming here, but he had some great one liner jokes, tricks with the food I hadn't seen before and just did an awesome presentation in which my family laughed a lot.
The food was excellent. I had KC Strip and scallops, my wife had chicken and KC strip, kids had ribeye and shrimp, lobster and shrimp and KC strip and chicken. Our plates were square and about 10" across and my birthday girl's plate was piled about 3" high with food! She hardly made a dent in it! Upon learning it was her birthday early on they treated her so special and she had a time she won't soon forget.
Upon 'finishing' our dinners that they boxed up for us, they brought out a tiny mango mousse that was great, then brought out a complementary piece of cheese cake for my 18 year old daughter as a birthday cake. They also brought out this birthday 'device' that they lit with a fireworks punk and it shot a fountain of sparks out the top, which in turn lit about 15 candles, began rotating and playing Happy Birthday. It resembled a Lotus flower in it's shape after it had been lit.
Toro is by far the most entertaining hibachi grill I've been to and look forward to going back. The food was top notch, service and entertainment was great and the amount of food was over the top. Prices were very very reasonable for the food portions you got. I think we'll be eating some leftovers for a day or two!
Try it out. I don't think you'll be...
Read more🧐😒🙄.... Hmmm. Where do I start??🤦🏾♀️.... It's crazy, because I read several of the reviews before we tried this place out... Just left the place.. A number of the reviews state that, the cooks aren't engaging, rudeness, etc. Starting out it was cool, as my family(party of 13 for my nephews birthday)had drinks while we waited to be seated. The bartender was nice, not sure of her name, but she was pretty nice and chill. Once we were seated, things seemed to have taken a turn. For starters I ordered calamari and the chicken as appetizers. Tell me why, we were halfway through the hibachi portion of the service, and still no appetizers. I had to ask where they were, and finally the calamari came out 10-12 minutes after my inquiry, which I declined, as we were already eating dinner. Next the cook/server was rude, not engaging at all!!!! The guy was literally just throwing stuff on our plates as if he didn't want to be there. Like my shrimp, steak, veggies, were all just tossed on top of my rice, when I tried to rotate my plate, he dropped some of the veggies. Took at least 10 minutes just to get yellow sauce after requesting it. The server slammed the little sauce trays on the table as if we were bothering him or something. My response was, you must be the server people in the reviews speak of. 🙄😒.. I am usually a VERY GOOD TIPPER, but in this case, I asked that the automatic gratuity of almost $15 be removed because my server was not deserving of said amount by far. The manager says, let me see what I can do .. Comes back saying he took the tip portion of of my check, but then went on to make excuses. He's a new cook, we're all tired, etc. I will say that the food was what I expect from a hibachi style restaurant where taste is concerned. Lastly, there are far too many reviews stating that servers are rude, not engaging, etc, for this to still...
Read moreI have been here twice. The first time was amazing. The place is clean (not normal for a Hibachi restaurant), the drinks came quick, the staff was friendly, and our chef was amazing and made my best friend's bachelorette dinner just awesome.
Fast forward 1 week. I had such a great experience that I brought my husband for our 1 year wedding anniversary. The place was still clean but thats about it. The salad dressing was watery and the salad wilted. I hate squash and zucchini so I typically ask if I can sub the veggies for additional rice. Last week this was not a problem... This week the waitress flat out said "no"... When I mentioned that last week it wasn't a problem she said they had gotten new management since my last visit (7 days ago) and they said no more substitutions. When i, obviously frustrated, said that it was fine and I just didn't want the veggies she said she would "do it for me this time." She was unpleasant the rest of the meal. Our chef wasn't nearly as engaged (I saw the chef from last week and he was having an amazing time with his table). We were nearly out the door when one of our tablemates (whom we did not know but got along with great) announced her wallet was missing. We helped her look, apologized that we didnt find it and tried to leave... She basically wouldnt allow us to leave and was becoming more accusatory toward my husband and I. She blocked our exit and kept repeating that her wallet was RIGHT THERE. I hoped that a manager would step in so we could leave, but I was left to stand there being accused until SHE allowed us to leave.
All in all our first anniversary dinner was ruined by a rude waitress, lackluster staff, and being accused of theft. I'm disappointed because I was VERY excited to have found a new hibachi...
