C.A.S.T. Cabaret Arts and Social Theater — Attraction in Overland Park

CAST is a FANTASTIC addition to the area! We drive up from Lawrence every Thursday evening for the West Coast Class (7pm) and Social Swing Party afterward (8:30-11pm) and it's a blast. I'm newbie, but the instructors are all great (especially Jesse & Ariel) and make everyone feel super welcome and comfortable in class. The DJ and music is always great, their sound system is high quality and the couple that is more often than not, at the door to greet you are super sweet. We've been for Friday Ballroom night, a couple other weekend group classes or intensives and various other events they've had, and always have a great time. The entry/class/social dance party fees are incredibly affordable too. When the bar is open, try the local Cherry sweet wine. (And leave a big tip - it's a non-profit and without our support, this budding biz won't thrive!) You can tell that the small group of founders/owners are really passionate about the arts and what they're wanting to do here. Can't wait to see how they evolve and take some more classes with their incredible in-house teachers. The pros they get to travel from afar to teach are impressive, too! Pop in on a Thursday night soon, and after 8:30, even just to watch for a few minutes - you won'tbe sorry! It's usually really well-attended, the dance floor busy with dancing (the space/floor is HUGE, by the way!), a bit dark, there's louder music playing and some dj lighting going on sometimes as well.... Cast is a reasonably priced dance studio, with group lessons and private lessons.

As far as I can tell, the instructors are independent contractors.

I tried a group lesson for West Coast Swing and didn't like it. I tried a private lesson with Shari Augustine and she's been teaching me and my gf every week for about 6 mos. We're focusing on West Coast Swing and 2 step.

I have a difficult time learning in a group environment with lots of people. Your experience will vary and may be much better. I love individual instruction and Shari has been great!

I give the group lessons 3 stars and Shari 5 stars, so the whole place gets 4 stars. If you're a fast learner I'd expect the group class to get 5 stars as well. It was too...

I heard that there was a comedy class and they needed props and or good bad examples of what not to do.

To my pleasant surprise and quite frankly my relief, I was a day off and ended up in a group foxtrot class that changed to two step once I showed up.

Shari Augustine was an excellent instructor and could really read what would help the students the most. Highly recommended for all skill levels. It was reminiscent of the high points of Juilliard.
