Gold Rush Café is a true hidden gem in Paducah, KY. And it's hidden, quite literally, in plain sight, in downtown Paducah.
In town for Derby weekend we were looking first food before doing some sight-seeing in Paducah (some may ask "Paducah? Really?) and this seemed like exactly the kind of local eatery we like to visit.
Gold Rush Café is located right on a corner and has an unassuming but welcoming storefront. When you walk in the door you're literally in the dining room, and you wait to be seated. It may look like there's only about a half dozen tables, but there's an entire dining room that you can't see on the other side of the wall.
On this particular Saturday morning the place was hopping so there was a bit of a wait, but that's to be expected. I'm guessing this place has its own local renown and that regulars know that, yea, there may be a bit of a wait, but that's normal. There was a young girl (I'm guessing 14-ish) taking names and helping seat customers.
Our server (whose name I don't recall) had a t-shirt on that said something to the effect of "Warning: I Have No Filter", which was awesome and, based on the décor, was pretty much the wit and sensibility of Gold Rush Café. It's about good food, good fun, and a free side of whimsy.
After looking at the menu I decided on the Cajun Forty-Niner. Shredded chicken, tomato, and bacon, heavily seasoned with Cajun seasoning, over some amazingly awesome Mac & Cheese. My wife opted for the banana pudding waffles.
As we waited staff was hurriedly rushing around taking care of things. Clearing tables, getting drinks, and helping keep the place in order. Great teamwork by the entire team!
Our food came out in less than ten minutes, and O.M.G., it was fantastic. I'm not generally one to go for putting something on top of Mac & Cheese, but this...there was some amazing wizardry going on with this. My wife LOVED the bread pudding waffles, and she hates bread pudding.
If we find ourselves in Paducah again, Gold Rush Café is definitely a must-visit. I get the feeling this hidden gem is also a...

Read moreOh where to start, so 20 minutes standing at rhe door waiting to be seated and not once even greeted. 20 minutes before one of the ladies acknowledged the 8 potential patrons waiting. All she says, sign this sheet and walked away. So as I'm approaching the hour mark and still waiting I saw mention the decor and general feeling of the dinning room. The decor is bordering on inappropriate content. I found it funny, but the modern-day bs people in the nation would freak out. The lack of A/C is my concern. Trying to look past it. But this 1hr 10 min wait only increases that dislike. So finally seated, 1 hour 23 minutes. I did get the pleasure of watching one of female servers show up very late. As the older servers made fun of her stating "the walk of same". So the lack of simple things like a spoon, coffee creamer, sugar and professionally speech is very apparent to hold no real issue for the staff. Tables are sticky, floors not cleaned and the staff is dressed in what appears to be straight from the hamper. So 43 minutes seating here and still no food. I'm now over 2 hours here. And let me tell you, I whole heartedly regret coming here. If we do close on the house out here this will never be a place I will visit. So food arrives, presentation is lack luster. Waffles are raw in the middle. Hashbrowns near perfect. Omelet is well unimaginable, bland and ruined by that fake cheese. So again as a chef, I would shut this place down, tear out the servers station to open up the dining room space. Train the staff, replace a fair amount of them straight away. Completely destroy the current menu...
