Ordered the Dinner combo which consists of soup, salad, and two items of choice. I opted for Hamachi Avocado roll and Salmon Avocado roll. Also got a Baby Octapus Kara-ag appetizer. This is a good amount for one person, or split with two people with small appetites. The soup and salad were nice small portions to start with, warm and umami soup and light but sweet dressing on the salad. The Hamachi avocado roll was pretty decent and the Salmon avocado roll were very bite size portions, pretty good on flavor. The Baby Octapus Kara-ag was also really nice and chewy. Ultimately, a decent spot to satisfy a simple sushi craving. Place does get quite busy in the evenings so there may be a wait for seating. Service was pretty swift when we needed them. And general ambiance is very busy, chattering, and warm.

came to araki sushi for saturday lunch. friendly service, decent prices (they have a lunch special that is available on weekends too), and good quality sashimi. service was also very friendly and attentive, asking us if we needed anything and refilling our water. our food came out very fast too. we got the sashimi/nigiri combo ($24) and the lunch special (rainbow roll and spicy scallop roll). it came with two soups and two salads. the thicker cuts of sashimi were really good and tasted good quality. the rest of the sushi was nothing extraordinary, but i enjoyed it and it was a good portion size. i'd come back for the lunch special and sashimi.

I ordered from them tonight. The online bill was $200. I was charged 300. The explanation they gave: prices online are not up to date ! You can check the attached picture. They charged me $70 for 30 pieces of sashimi. Nothing fancy: tuna, salmon, hamachi, etc. 6 pieces of each. The rest was poor quality. An item was missing (mixed tempura). The person who gave us the order was unpleasant, limit insulting, not apologetic at all. We had dinner there in the past and the same person served us and was similarly unpleasant. There are many better restaurants in the area. Stay away.

Not recommended for vegans and vegetarians or anyone with food sensitivities. I ordered a veggie sushi roll and they put tobiko (fish eggs) on it. I specifically had ordered this veggie roll because it did not have tobiko on it and I didn't want to have to deal with asking them to leave it off if another roll. I had to send it back due to the fish eggs and me being vegan. Why would they out fish eggs on the veggie sushi?

They remade the roll and put tempura yam inside, this was also not mentioned on the menu. Tempura contains eggs (not vegan) and most likely gluten for those of you who are gluten free.

Perhaps these issues were due to the fact that we were part of a large party or perhaps it was the language barrier. But I left hungry since I couldn't eat what I had ordered and they didn't understand enough of what I was trying to explain to them to remake the roll.

2 out of 4 if us also had stomach aches after eating here and we didn't even...

STAY CLEAR‼ While the restaurant is conveniently located on University Avenue, I feel compelled to issue a warning if you are a person of color. We had a deeply disappointing experience last night. I do not take accusations of racism or discrimination lightly, but the alienation we experienced was undeniable. We received no hospitality, no menus, and not even water, while white customers were warmly greeted, provided menus, soy sauce, and attentive service. Eventually, I had to find my own menus and water. Other white customers were given priority seating in the booths, while we were denied. When I pointed out that we had been ignored, the staff simply stared at me blankly and walked away without saying a word. At the end of our meal, I had to search for someone to provide us with the bill because they refused to come to our table. When I finally tracked down the bill, the staff flung it across the table and walked away.

I definitely won't be...

A Chinese-American restaurant with not a Japanese person for miles.

Food:

I had miso ramen and gyoza, my friend had teriyaki chicken.

Ramen: the worst I’ve ever had, cold meat, cold egg, cold broth, no flavour. I’ve had better instant. Couldn’t finish it as I felt nauseous.

Gyoza: equally dreadful, deep fried with what looked like reconstituted chicken and no aromatics, just flat flavour with a weird tempura (why?) dipping sauce.

Teriyaki chicken: precooked chicken warmed up with brown sauce on top with some lettuce and a slice of orange (?). Served with a sad looking iceberg lettuce salad covered in mayo and miso soup (ok).

Service:

Fairly friendly, but they forgot my friend’s order of rice.

I assume the sushi is slightly better, but there is absolutely no chance I would eat raw fish from here after this debacle. If you like Japanese food...
