My search for a properly made classic Cuban sandwich in Cleveland brought me here. This review will be a summary of 3 separate visits over the course of about 9 months.
Visit #1 - Impressed by the cleanliness of the place & friendliness of the staff. I had seen the Cuban listed on the internet, but it was not on their menu board. I asked, and the young lady gladly had them make one for me and explained they were getting a new menu board eventually. It was delicious and contained exactly what a classic Cuban should: Pork, ham, cheese, mustard and pickle pressed in a flat bread ... nothing more, nothing less. It was PERFECT!
Visit #2 - Placed my order online. The description clearly listed the correct ingredients and said that other toppings could be added on request. Since I didn't request anything extra, I expected a sandwich identical to the one I received on my first visit. Instead, it included tomato, lettuce and mayo ... Still delicious, but no longer a classic Cubano. Worse, I was charged $2 more than the price listed on the ordering site (sandwich was still not on the in-store menu board).
Visit #3 - Stopped in and ordered at the counter. There was a new menu board that listed the Cuban sandwich. I was told they were out of bread and didn't know when they would get more. Now I can understand running out of random ingredients occasionally (send someone to the grocery store to get more), but if you sell sandwiches and run out of bread, and can't get more locally, there's something seriously wrong. So in the end, I left without ordering. On this trip, the staff was considerably less friendly and helpful than on the previous 2 visits.
A couple of side notes: a) I noticed the new menu board showed the price I was actually charged, but the online ordering site still shows a lower price. b) Sales tax should not be charged on carry-out food in Ohio. This happened on my first two visits. It wasn't a huge amount, so I didn't say anything, but it needs to be fixed. c) Based on my third visit and the increasing number of negative reviews, I am wondering if there has been a change in management or even ownership. Things are clearly going downhill. d) I really liked this place at first, but now I'm probably not going to ever return. Instead, I will stick to Caribe Latin Bake Shop, which is the only other place I know in Cleveland that makes an...
Read moreWent in for the first time after driving by for a while. Told the young girl at the counter it was my first time here and she just pointed to the QR code on the dirty counter. So I scanned it and my daughter and I decided on an order. Kids meal and one empanada with a side of rice. As the young lady tells me that my total will be 9.99 I got OK fine I get my credit card out and then she changes it to 12.99and says she forgot to charge me for my empanada I’m like OK whatever. Then a Young man comes out from behind the counter and tells me that they’re out of refried beans??? Kind of thinking that should be a stable at this place how could they be out of refried beans? Choices OK I’ll have a chicken empanada and my daughter will have the kids meal with the beef empanada. So we sit and wait at a table that looks like someone just got up and left from but nobody had wiped off in weeks there were crumbs and everything all over it. It’s not like the kids standing behind the counter gonna come out and wipe the table up at one point during this day. So we get our food and we leave I get home there are three chicken empanadas two big bowls of rice. I don’t understand what the difference is it between a kid meal and an adult meal because the empanadas are the same size the bowls of rice were the same size? I think they need to rethink this menu. I will say however the three chicken empanadas we’re good the rice was good as well. I want to give it a higher rating because of the quality of the food but the laziness of the children working behind the counter led a lot to be desired not to mention the fact that there’s a Mercedes-Benz behind the building with fancy rims on it and the Tennessee air brake on the rear deck lid leads me to believe that someone’s making money they’re not gonna get any more...
Read moreFound this place online and did some reading on the reviews. Many of them were very positive and raved about the exceptional quality and taste of the food. Well having grown up eating authentic Latin food, this is not it. Tried the beef empanada, and it was very bland with NO seasoning. Then I went to the Polish empanada. To me it was fried dough stuffed with old hot dogs. It was not good either. We also tried the chicken with the potatoes in it, and it was so-so. The chicken was a little rubbery but the potatoes were very good. You would think that if the potatoes were very soft the chicken would be too. Nope. Now we get to the rice. It was good but not like I have had in the past. There are many Mexican restaurants that serve better yellow rice. When I was finished, I had a not so good taste in my mouth from cooking oil. So i moved on to the apple and cinnamon empanada for desert. again, greasy flavor, found the apples, but the cinnamon was nowhere to be found or taste. If it wasn't for the very good potatoes and the middle of the road rice, it would not deserve any stars. Parking was a disaster , almost no place to park. People ordering after our order was placed got their food first. Ours came 45 minutes later. Let me repeat that, "45 MINUTES LATER". Needless to say, we had to try this place to see if the good reviews were accurate or the bad ones were accurate. Well, we will not order food from here again so that should tell you how bad it is. Don't do it!! It's...
