I realized my Mum had been gone nearly 20 yrs…I have managed to teach myself a few a Bengali dishes; I fail miserably at deserts. And she was amazing at everything. I found Sukhadia on line, and they had a lovely selection of sweets they ship! Some items I knew by name, or photo, but there were a few items I only knew by the Bengali “slang name”. Thankfully, Sukhadia provides clear descriptions, and everything I ordered was exactly what I hoped for. Everything was clearly hand packed, to the brim. And the boxes they use for each “pastry” so beautiful! Not one drop of syrup leaked! I am sooo excited to have Shondesh and Carrot Halwa. I haven tasted them since I was a child. Perhaps I can convince Neelam to ship Bengali Paesh. Made with slow cooked milk, thick with shujee, sugar, rose water, cardamom, no nuts lots of raisins! Made for me every birthday. If you miss your Mum, India or just want to travel by way Indian Sweets I highly recommend Sukhadia! Wonderful quality, hand packed with thought, personalized service, affordable and beautiful packaging for Christmas, Diwali, Weddings…they have several Cafe’s if you live near NJ! And, they provide contact information, I called to thank them! I’ve already suggested we drive to a location in NJ sometime, Road Trip!...
Read moreWe visited Sukhadia going by the perception that there will good warmth in food and reception. We were unfortunate to have been disappointed at one of those two expectations.
When we went in and enquired about the food, chef and helper were very welcoming and warm and offered to make us anything they could make to our liking.
I went out and got my friends and and family in so they could order things of their liking..when I got back in, we were received by another person, likely store manager. Suddenly, not everything was doable, infact, half the things on Menu were also not available. We could see a clear intent of driving us to only order things that was probably ready or had high margins.. but I don't want to guess.
By disappointment was with the tone and approach. We picked out chairs and table and brought it out for dining and also put it back there. I do not mind helping myself, but I was definitely not expecting such cold and mean reception.
Saving grace was the food (and 2 stars are for the chef) who made us good thali and other Chaat and Rice items.
I would be very careful visiting any of the Sukhadia branches going forward. Even if they have good chefs, they need to figure how they bring the culture...
Read moreI read many of the reviews before going and still went with an open mind as we've loved eating at Sukhadia's in Chicago. Disappointed with this branch. The service - BAD! The staff are rude! They act like they are doing as a favor and giving us free food. If you don't know how to be hospitable, don't be in a industry like this!! No basic courtesy and just plain rude. Also, they expect you to tip when you place your order for pretty much a self service place! The place - it's okay. Probably better for take out. The dine in experience isn't really that good. The water bottles kept on the tables are dirty! The cutlery is very questionable. So drink at your own risk! The food - its decent but not the best. We had a soggy Bhelpuri, the samosa chaat and Pav bhaji were good. The food is mostly on the sweeter side than savory.
I definetly wouldn't recommend this place or go here again unless they really rework on their service and clean cutlery. This place definetly has so...
