We order from Dabbawalla regularly and really appreciate the convenience of their home delivery service and the overall concept. However, there are some areas where improvement is needed if we’re going to continue as long-term customers.

First, the packaging could use significant upgrades. The outer delivery container is very flimsy and not always securely sealed, so items fall/ spill. The food containers themselves don’t hold up well if the food is stored for more than a few hours—especially overnight—as they tend to get soggy, lose their shape, and allow food to seep out. But I appreciate that they use paper instead of Styrofoam which might be a healthier option.

Speaking of oil, we’ve found that many of the items, fried taste as though the oil is reused too many times. This not only affects the flavor, but also given stomach issues, acidity and discomfort for us, which is concerning for a recurring meal service.

Value: let's see, after tallying up across a monthish, we realized that there really was not much cost benefit compared to ordering from a typical restaurant nearby. The main advantage here is convenience. Given that, Dabbawalla needs to prioritize both quality (particularly the cooking oils and packaging) and variety & Amount to justify the long-term commitment that this service requires.

On a positive note, we really enjoy the rotis and dal. However, the biryani was disappointing, with just a couple of pieces of chicken over oily, fried rice—more reminiscent of Pakistani cooking than the Indian style we expected, and not as healthy as we’d like.

Additionally, service reliability and clear communication could be areas for improvement. There have been occasional delivery delays and missed items, and it would be helpful if the weekly menu was shared in advance or included more variety to better accommodate families’ preferences and dietary needs.

Consistency and quality are especially important for a recurring family meal service, and unfortunately, we feel these need some attention from Dabbawalla. We genuinely love the overall idea, and hope they make the necessary improvements so we can continue ordering from them...
