We had come to this place because my fiances coworkers had raved about the breakfast here at his work. Well unfortunately we got there a little too late and they stopped serving breakfast at 11am so we decided to try their lunch menu. I got the 1/2 lb Angus burger with a side of Mac and cheese and he got their fried chicken special with onion rings and mashed potatoes with gravy. Keep in mind that they only serve their fried chicken one time a week on Wednesdays. Our food arrived and mine looked fine but his had the smallest pieces of chicken that we had ever seen served at a resturaunt. My food was average, about what I've come to expect from a diner but the only thing I feel worth mentioning was the Mac and cheese. My fiance on the other hand had a different experience. He chose the fried chicken because it was their once a week special and he assumed that it had to be good if they only served it as a special. His 2 pieces of tiny chicken were flavorless and did not fill him up, they look bigger in the picture because of the angle of my camera but they both fit in the palm of his hand. Mashed potatoes and gravy tasted like box mashed potatoes with instant gravy. He said the onion rings were the best thing on his plate. The older brunette that served us seemed bored the whole time when dealing with us and told us that "people flock here for our fried chicken" but did not express any other concern when we told her how disappointed we were with the chicken other than saying "I hope you get something better next time". Overall the experience was a C and my fiance was sad to...
Read moreFor over almost 40 years our family goes to this restaurant when we can less consistently now as we move to North Georgia. The last few trips over the last few years have been absolutely miserable experiences due mainly to service. Ok well pretty much all due to service. Each server we have had basically could give two flips to taking care of needs as refills and or quickness to greeting and follow up with beverages and or condiments etc. 5 mins to greet a table then 5 mins to come back with drinks and finally almost 25 mins for food to come out. And this was a slow empty parking lot kind of shift. Not like we came early morning rush hour or dinner crowd. I would say that maybe they did give two flips, just not the nice kind. Granted I would expect some possible slowness with concerns and issues but nope. Full looking staff and half the crew more worried about their cell phones and Facebook accounts I guess then to worry about turning tables or even remembering tables. And then asking for To go boxes before food is even finished eating. Contradicting it sounds but the truth it is. Not for turning tables but maybe to rush us out? Who knows. Either way a family legacy and true enjoyment for decades past I guess has to come to an end as the pancakes were always a family rich memory and fondness of things such as Jr's. Things were said in the past to management over the years but apparently has fallen on deaf ears as I did not think service could have gotten worse. Can we have the automatic drink dispensers and table top ordering devices and that would fix...
Read moreThis is a very popular place with a loyal clientele. I am told that the breakfasts are extremely good but I have never had breakfast here so I cannot comment on that. I go to a barbecue place for the barbecue not the ham and eggs.
That said I will not be returning here. While the staff is warm and friendly and the atmosphere is homey and welcoming the food is lackluster.
I had the sliced pork sandwich with fries and Brunswick stew. The stew and the iced tea were very good, but they were not enough to save the meal.
The sliced pork was dry and tasteless and served on a bun with a minimum of thin BBQ sauce. I asked for more sauce and received a 1 oz cup of thin fairly tasteless barbecue sauce. I should say hear that I dislike getting my barbecue sandwiches pre sauced. In a truly good barbecue restaurant the meat can stand on its own and may not need any sauce at all but if it does need sauce I like to have a choice and the opportunity to doctor it up as I like it. I should not have to ask for sauce and I should never have to ask for more sauce.
The fries were large plank cut home fries that were barely done, soft and pale, with no crunch at all. There is an art to good fries but there are no artists here. My wife had collard greens and blackeyed peas for her sides. She reported that the greens tasted as if they had been boiled with absolutely no seasoning and had little flavor. The peas were okay but watery.
While nothing at JR's was horrible or disgusting, nothing other than the Brunswick stew was especially good either. we will not be returning...
