Nori Tori Japanese Buffet — Restaurant in Pembroke Pines

I visited this location as a meet-up with a very good friend who lives in the Grand Palms development immediately behind. Both sushi lovers, we were interested in seeing how the establishment stacked up under the new name. We had both visited previously and on numerous occasions the Shinjus located in Davie and Coral Springs, but had not together tried this location.

Parking at the location can be a little bit troublesome, particularly at busy times, with some of the options at some distance, but we got settled without too much trouble. Inside, although the establishment was quite busy, we were seated quite quickly. Service is along the same lines as Shinju (for those familiar with that establishment), so immediately after a server took our drink orders it was off to the buffet.

A word about cleanliness on multiple levels - I found this very well cared-for. Servers and workers put commendable effort into keeping all areas clean; and the establishment also provided gloves for patrons to use at the buffet - enough so as to allow a change for each visit. Even outside our current Covid situation, I think this is an excellent option to allow for patrons.

One of the things that has marked Shinju in past and definitely does for Nori Tori, as well, is the turnover and freshness. Turnover is a function of busyness, and this location certainly has that, so the freshness of what's on the buffet line is very solid. Also as normal, the selections available are very wide allowing different tastes to find plenty of options they can take advantage of. I will not go so far as to say that the quality is that of a top, dedicated sushi restaurant; however, I was extremely appreciative of the sushi chefs' creativity in designing and preparing their offerings - they did an excellent job in putting together many combinations of elements that was tasty and provided the diner with a variety of textures as well. (Apologies I didn't take a picture of at least that first plate - it was a marvel to see!) The only disappointment I had, such as it was, was that it was not a weekend dinner serving; so there was no sashimi (cuts of fish only) available. But there were an abundance of rolls, plenty of nigiri (cuts of fish and other ingredients on a finger of rice), and a temaki (hand rolls) to suit, along with the usual choice of salads (whitefish, salmon, sea weed, and so forth).

I did spend a little time at the hot bar for a few dishes; the choices, as one might expect, were not as wide as on the sushi side - but it was there was a reasonable variety that was also kept quite fresh thanks to turnover. I was pleased to see a goodly selection of soups included, from wonton to egg drop to hot & sour and a couple variety of miso-based soups as well. And as usual, a well-frequented hibachi grille was doing constant business in one corner.

All in all, it was a very pleasant dining experience, with solid service keeping our drinks constantly filled, on top of doing its primary job - managing that buffet - just right as one would expect. For the person who is looking for a casual sushi experience to easily cover a variety of tastes, it's hard to go wrong with Shinju...

Alright it's time I bring the truth. For many years I have attended shinju and have received the same mediocre food. The only thing that happens to be great is the service , no offense. Let's start with the amazing sushi selection! First selection is vast but why do it if all the sushi comes out crappy,sticky, and tasting funny. None of the sushi seem to carry it unique taste. I am a huge fan of sushi, I would eat sushi off the floor I love it so much. Shinju's sushi has their sushi tasting quite foul at times. One time the sushi was so bad I requested to ask for a fresh one, the man not only gave me a smug look but just grab a fish rolled up in some very dry seaweed looking thing and handed it to me. The worst part is it was worst then the Sushi I originally didn't want to eat. Remember I have been hitting this shinju Buffet many times. Now the food is where they step it up a little bit but let's not get ahead of ourselves. Tasteless food sometimes you get lucky with some good food. Only thing they don't mess up on it the ice cream and charging you a nasty price. Overall shinju has been put on a pedestal for a reason I don't know. It needs to either step their game up or lower their price because coughing up 25 bucks per head is not worth what you get in quality.
