I moved here from Northern Virginia /DC a year ago, I only have a couple of restaurants in town that I enjoy ... Blue Koi being one of them. The food is pretty good and our server Aaron is amazing. We Consider him a friend :) having said that we are regulars, we come in every week and up until tonight we had always had a pretty good experience. Tonight we had a reservation for 6:30. We arrived at 6:15 and were seated right away, then our favorite server came To the rescue and took our orders ... we sat and waited for an hour then we began to feel a bit concerned ... we were watching as people were Coming in to pick up the MANY to go orders one after the other .. then we watched more to go orders ... another 1 hour later we expressed our concerns. Arron was in a panic all evening checking and rechecking on our food .. finally we spoke to TAO the owner and she seemed to be able to get things moving for us pretty quickly. The thing which disappointed me the most and was unexpected, was that in NOVA/DC if this were to happen to a regular client who the owner valued they would have been taken care of. At the very least come to the table and apologized and offered some type of credit or something!!! I am very disappointed and frankly shocked that we were treated In such a way. Aaron was wonderful as usual and took care of us best he could. But honestly this left all of us exhausted and frustrated to the point that we couldn’t even enjoy our dinner when it finally did make It to our table almost two hours later! My suggestion is for the owner to take care Of all customers but especially...
Read moreWe’ve been here before and really enjoyed it. After last night we probably won’t go back. For some reason our table seemed to have been forgotten by our server. It took almost a half hour after we seated until he finally brought us glasses for our wine. Then another 15 til we could order. Meanwhile, tables seated well after ours were already receiving food. Our food was a mix of good and not so good. I ordered 2 sushi rolls that I have enjoyed there in the past, but last night they did not compare. They looked unappetizing, were small, and had things in them I don’t remember getting before. It was weird. For the price, they did not measure up. When we were finally ready to go more than 2 hours after we were seated because the service was so slow, we asked our server what happened that our service was so slow. We pointed out that other tables were seated well after us and were served and left well before us. He got very defensive and said they had different servers—well, the table next to us had the same server as us and were served much quicker—he didn’t appreciate us saying that. When he finally brought the check to sign, he had charged us a 15% gratuity—on our table of 2– because he didn’t think we would leave a tip! We were able to get that reversed by someone else, but our server continiued to be very rude to us. It was so strange. Oh, and they flat out charge a fee to use a credit card—so tacky. It’s the cost of doing business—build it into your prices but don’t add a flat fee. Check your bill before you pay to avoid...
Read moreTo preface this, I have never been to a higher class Sushi/Asian Cuisine place before. Blue Koi delivers everything you would want from a sushi restaurant. The seating area is beautiful, especially during the evening as you can watch the sunset.
I ordered the Sushi Regular - which is served with miso soup - and Jasmine Tea. When the yea first came out it was a bit cold for my taste, but the servers were very accommodating and had it warmed up. It likely needed some time to steep as well. The miso came out and was just a bit too salty, but still delicious. And finally the Sashimi and Sushi platter came out. The California Roll is generally good, but mostly as a way to eat the candied ginger and wasabi 😋 (did you know that a large amount of wasabi make your scalp tingle!) The Sashimi on the other hand, I cannot say enough good about it. The flavors were perfect and the fish was very easy to eat. The Salmon especially was delicious.
Overalls I highly recommend Blue Koi to those who enjoy a good Asian meal. Judging by the quality of the Sushi I can only assume the rest of the menu is just as good if not better! If I had a more culinarily adventurous significant other I would definitely bring them for a...
