Handel's Homemade Ice Cream — Restaurant in Peoria

Handel’s has always been our go-to for ice cream — the flavor options are endless, and the ice cream itself is consistently rich and creamy. But tonight’s experience left me incredibly disappointed, and I feel compelled to speak up not about the product, but the overall customer experience at this location.

It’s honestly shocking to see a shop staffed with six high school-aged employees and not a single adult or manager present to oversee operations. The wait was outrageous — not because of a rush, but because the team working seemed completely disinterested in actually helping customers. They wandered around aimlessly, blatantly ignoring the growing line, and at one point one of them even asked aloud, “Is anyone taking orders?” That says it all.

Instead of stepping up to help, they were arguing with each other, lacking even the most basic customer service skills or awareness. It was frustrating and honestly disrespectful to the people standing there ready to spend their hard-earned money.

To make matters worse, we watched one employee pick up trash from the ground and then proceed to scoop ice cream without washing their hands. That’s not just poor service — that’s a health concern.

I ordered two four scoop samplers for delivery. I called to ask if the fundraiser could be counted before the start time and was told no. Called again, asked if delivery counted for the fun raiser and was told in an exasperated tone yes, but you need to specify to print an extra receipt or it won't count.

Delivery was super quick and correct.

Price and serving size was more than decent and reasonable.

Flavors Ordered: -Cotton Candy- super sweet -Birthday Cake- eh -Vanilla with Oreo- decent -Blue Monster- unexpected winner, plus the kids loved the blue tongues -Butter Pecan- large pieces of pecan, light, very good -Pumpkin swirl- eh, ok -Watermelon ice- sour, light, good for a couple bites then bland -Strawberry sorbet- ok -side waffle cone, yummy

While there were a lot of available flavors, I didn't realize that the list of flavors online was in general, not actually currently available, depending on location.

Flavors I wanted to try but were not available: -Lime sherbet -Pomegranate sorbet -Coffee -Dulce de Leches -German chocolate cake -Chocolate malt -Peach -Mud Pie

Either way, the point is 90% of the flavors I was interested in, were not available.

Will I go back, probably not. Even though it sounds like it, am I complaining, no. Just sharing...

Ice cream was great, customer service was terrible. Kids working were pretty rude and had attitude. My wife ordered, my son ordered, then I stepped up to order. I asked if I could just get two scoops of ice cream. Kid says “yeah that’s a small”. I say cool, and order mint and peanut butter. He says he can’t do that. I asked why not, he said I have to order a large to get more than one flavor. I then said that I just asked him for two scoops and that was it. He said you can’t get more than one flavor unless you order a large. We went back and forth a little bit since I only wanted two scoops of ice cream, not a large, but apparently I couldn’t get that. Even tho he said two scoops of ice cream was a small. Made no sense. Have had this at the Scottsdale location as well as the northern location with no problems. This location won’t give you two scoops of ice cream that are different flavors unless you buy a large which is essentially 6 scoops. Won’t go back. Too bad. Really looked forward to having this ice cream in our area but will just have to go to the other locations instead. Plus customer service is way...
