We decided to give this new restaurant a try for dinner tonight. I decided on the pulled pork, hand-cut french fries, and brisket baked beans. He got the smoked chicken (1/2 of a bird), fries, and cole slaw. The dinners come with a square of cornbread. If you've been to Famous Dave's, you will remember the 6 or 7 bottles of different types of BBQ sauce on each table. Mission BBQ offers choices on the tables also. The main difference between these two restaurants is that this one is a "workaurant." You place your order at the counter, grab your plasticware and cups, then go to the side drink counter to get ice and a beverage. While you are there, you can grab a squeeze bottle of ketchup to take to your table. If you want butter for the cornbread, you can find it in the middle compartments near the ketchup. Straws and lids are also in that area...just open the drawer and grab what you need. Seems like a lot to learn. Right? Soon they called our name, and we went back to the front counter to pick up our food trays. We sat down in one of the spacious wooden booths, tore off a piece of paper towel (napkins) from the stand on the table, and looked at the variety of sauce choices on the table. I squeezed some ketchup onto the paper-covered metal tray (1/4 pan) and reached for a french fry and took a bite. Lukewarm. I grabbed my plastic fork and tasted the pulled pork. Also lukewarm. I was very disappointed. I prefer hot food. I took my tray back to the front counter and reported the problem. They replaced the pulled pork right away, and the manager apologized and said he would bring out fresh fries as soon as they came out of the fryer, which he did. The hot food was much better than the barely warm version, and they gave me a serving of peach cobbler for my trouble. Overall, in terms of taste, I would rate the food as average. However, the amount of food in an order is extreme. Each of our dinners had enough food for the two of us, so take heed (and use the extra $$ to get some...
Read moreO.M.G. The new Black Plate Special is smoked ribeye... And I'm not even sure how it's legal to be that delicious! Good golly, Miss Molly!. This is now going to be one of the toughest things to keep myself from going there every single day for one. The black plate special shrimp is hands down one of the most delicious things I've ever tasted in my life. The ONLY way this plate to get any better is if there were twice as many shrimp! The shrimp are perfectly cooked and seasoned.
I have now been coming here to mission BBQ regularly for the last few months for lunches and even a few dinners and I can say that the employees in this establishment are the most highly motivated and helpful and friendly restaurant employees I have encountered anywhere in Central Illinois. Kudos to the management for having such a positive and awesome workforce!
So I had initially posted a poor review for this restaurant due to my initial experience with some repeatedly cold food the first time I went there. Well whatever issues they may have had back then are long gone because I have been going here almost every other day now for the last couple weeks on lunch and on my way home from work for dinner and every single experience has been a home run. The food is hot, fast and delicious. I absolutely recommend this restaurant to anyone at any time now. The employees are super motivated to help and the kitchen is doing a kick ass job of serving delicious food every time. So glad this is a local restaurant for me... It has transformed my lunch experience from crappy fast food like McDonald's to first rate quality food that is both filling delicious and...
Read moreAs I walked in behind a family trying Mission BBQ for the first time, we all stared at the menu blankly together. We were greeted by a wonderful employee who walked us through the menu and explained all of the different items. They told us that there were no freezers in the restaurant because everything is made fresh everyday. I tried the two meat sampler with a side of fresh cut french fries and a soda. I went with the brisket and pulled pork. Both meats were great. The tough choices I had to deal with were the abundance of different style sauces. I tried 8 different BBQ sauces. All were good and had their own strengths and weaknesses. I really liked the Smokey Mountain sauce. It was similar to a sweet Kansas City sauce with a smokey taste. The french fries were awesome. They do use a season salt on them. The employees were great, checking on you if you are enjoying your food and what not. If you are a first responder, military, or retired from any of those, you will love the decor. There are many pictures, uniform items, and unit/department patches all over the walls and booths. I could have spent more time just looking around. The restaraunt was clean and comfortable. The food was ready in short time. The prices were comparable to other BBQ restauraunts. I would definately go back and...
