It is always difficult to find a decent restaurant while traveling and away from major centers. Perry, Georgia is about 30 miles south of Macon, Georgia and somewhat rural. It's population is about 22,000. But it was a convenient and cheaper overnight stop on our way south along Rt. 75. I am so happy I searched out restaurants and found this one, about 1 to 1.5 miles off the interstate in the small Perry town center.
I am a "foodie". I enjoy good restaurants and good food. My wife knows that I will pick apart dishes and say the chef should have done this or that with different ingredients or cooking preparations.
We sat at the bar and quickly received refreshing drinks. I can't explain why they were so good, one was just a Tito's and tonic, and the other a gin & tonic, but the bartender made them quickly, in tall glasses and they were perfect. Next, we ordered the crab cake which was huge, lightly seared on the outside, a generous amount of crab inside, accompanied by nicely-diced and prepared sun-dried tomato, corn and onion. Just the right amount of spice added. Someplace. Still not sure. My wife then had a huge slab of exquisite salmon atop some mashed potatoes accompanied by asparagus. Mind you, this was about the fourth time she has had restaurant salmon in the previous week or two. She adored her plate! I went with the Bolognese Pappardelle that included short rib in the wonderful red sauce sticking nicely to the fresh pasta. Wow. One of the first times I've been to a restaurant where we just enjoyed everything and had absolutely no critiques.
I wish there was a website which pointed out great hidden places like this restaurant to stop in while traveling along a route. We'll be back!
Finding a good restaurant while traveling in rural areas can be quite challenging. During our journey southward along Rt. 75, my wife and I stopped in Perry, Georgia, a small town with a population of about 22,000, which was about 30 miles south of Macon, Georgia. Although we chose this place for its convenience and affordability, I'm thrilled that I searched for restaurants in the area and discovered this gem, located about a mile or so off the interstate in Perry's town center.
As a self-proclaimed "foodie," I have high standards when it comes to dining out. I'm always eager to try new restaurants and dishes, and I tend to scrutinize everything on my plate. However, at this particular establishment, my wife and I were blown away by the exceptional food and service. We sat at the bar and were promptly served our drinks, which were expertly made by the bartender. The Tito's and tonic and gin & tonic were both tall, refreshing, and perfectly balanced.
For our appetizer, we ordered the crab cake, which was generously sized and seared to perfection. The crabmeat was abundant, and the accompanying sun-dried tomato, corn, and onion were nicely diced and prepared, with just the right amount of spice. My wife's main course, a large piece of salmon served on a bed of mashed potatoes with asparagus, was exquisite, and she raved about it. She had ordered salmon several times in the previous week or two at different restaurants, but this one was by far the best. I opted for the Bolognese Pappardelle, which was a delicious mix of short rib and fresh pasta in a rich red sauce.
Overall, we were thoroughly impressed with the quality of the food and the service. We enjoyed everything and had no critiques, which is a rare occurrence for us. I only wish there was a website that could help travelers find hidden dining treasures like this one. We definitely plan...
Read moreMy name is Bob Gafeney, and my wife, Tina, and I had the pleasure of dining at Oliver Perry’s today. Let me just say, this was an extraordinary experience from start to finish—easily the best meal we’ve had in years. And that’s saying something, as I’ve traveled extensively for Amazon and Microsoft, dining across multiple states!
I ordered the red snapper with mashed potatoes and green beans, while my wife had the shrimp Alfredo. We also started with the garden salad. Every dish was crafted to perfection. The snapper was fresh, tender, and flavorful, paired beautifully with creamy potatoes and crisp, vibrant green beans. My wife couldn’t stop raving about the Alfredo—the shrimp were cooked just right, and the sauce was rich without being overwhelming.
The atmosphere was welcoming and sophisticated, and the staff made us feel like honored guests with their attentive and friendly service. It’s clear this restaurant takes pride in every detail, from the food to the ambiance.
If you’re looking for a dining experience that surpasses expectations, Oliver Perry’s is the place to go. For me, it’s not just a meal but a memory. This restaurant has set a new standard, and we can’t wait to...
Read moreIt's been tough to dine out these past few years. Either restaurants are understaffed, have supply chain issues, suffer morale issues, or experience all three. I've given up expecting a good experience.
But last night that changed!
For my mom's birthday, we dined at Oliver Perry's. I let them know through the Google reservation system that it was a special night - my mom's birthday.
When we got there, they sat us next to the kitchen, by the bathrooms - not a prime location in a restaurant, so I braced myself for yet another "post-COVID" dining experience.
But we were blown away!
Our server, Matt, was fantastic. Like..."Natalia's, old-school, wide-open, knowledgeable, caring" kind of fantastic.
The food was delicious. My mother had the ravioli with shrimp, my father the scallops, and my sister and I had the lamb chops. Everything was perfect, from the plating to the flavors to the temperature of the lamb. Our proximity to the kitchen worked out well - I could easily tip the grill cook for such a great job.
Again, kudos to Matt. He was on point, even knowing answers to questions about art on the walls.
And thank you to the entire Oliver Perry's team for providing a...
