Rec's Hushpuppie Heaven — Restaurant in Pflugerville

If I could give it 10 ⭐️ I would. I’ve been on a disappointing quest to find good cornmeal battered catfish since we moved to the area a year and a half ago and the places I’ve gone have either had too much flour in the mix or their catfish was cheap and muddy. WELL TODAY WAS THE DAY, I FINALLY FOUND IT! The catfish was perfectly breaded with the right (IMO) blend of cornmeal, the fish was nice and white without the mud water taste. The portions are large. I got the Rob plate which is a fried shrimp and catfish combo with seasoned fries. Definitely recommend! Rob was the one who took our order and was super friendly and accommodating. My husband was supposed to order the hand dipped corn dog but switched it up and ordered the chicken tenders and he said they were good too. So we had to order one corn dog just so we could taste them, they’re good as well. But THE STAR of the show were the shrimp and jalapeño stuffed hush puppies, WE LOVED THEM! Saw this place recommended on NextDoor, so I decided to try it on a whim. I am SO glad I did! Great local restaurant with amazing flavor and very reasonable prices. Just look at the second picture I uploaded for what my family thought of this new community treasure.

The Philly Cheese steak was full of perfectly seasoned meat, the fries had a unique and amazing flavor (these aren't your run-of-the-mill fast food fries), and the corndog was one of the best I've ever had. And of course, I can't forget the titular hushpuppies! I only tried the shrimp bacon jalapeno, but if the others are anything like that one then I need to go back and try them all. They have that same crispy on the outside, soft on the inside breading as the corndogs with just that hint of sweetness, and I did not expect the shrimp to be so fresh.

This has been added to the list of go-to food places for myself...

This is my new go to fried cat fish and fry place. I cannot begin to tell you how good the food here is! I haven’t had fried catfish since I moved to Texas but I’m so glad my first time was here. It was perfectly seasoned and battered and the catfish inside was light and delicate. The fries are SO well seasoned too. I am obsessed.

We also got the Mac and cheese hush puppies which were so delicious. They were huge, the size of tennis balls. I was expecting them to be hard but instead they were light, the cornbread batter was sweet and tasty and the Mac and cheese was soooo yummy.

If you’re in downtown Pflugerville you definitely need to check this place out. We ordered the food to go and ate it at a brewery next door. It was so so good. Will be back again and will be buying...
