I ordered from doordash today. Here’s my two cents. I have been to Oahu and Maui Hawaii and a tid bit about me- I am a loco moco snob. I have eaten so many of those when I visited Hawaii.
Loco Moco- it came through delivery doordash. Still warm. Fried egg with runny yolk 5 stars for that. The patty meat and gravy 3 stars - the gravy tasted just like a mix. It did not satisfy my cravings though. I ate the leftover the next day and it became so watery the gravy. That would not happen if it’s the real brown gravy they cooked. Def I know it was the powder gravy mix. That is just my guess.
Mac salad- 4 stars it could have been colder in temperature. The taste is somewhat there but something is missing that umami taste I am looking for. Needs much more mayo so it’s creamier.
Short ribs- it’s very chewy and it needed more marination. Not enough marinade and it’s too bland. I could not eat it. What a waste.
That’s why only 2 stars just because the mac salad is ok and the runny yolk is A+
I did expect that it could have more bolder flavors like the ones frm Maui and Oahu. Something is missing. I did not get the vibe of Hawaiian food. Needs improvement. I hope they will change the recipe development. Not sure if the owners have been to any...
Read moreThe food and service here is great, and the prices are very affordable as well.
My husband and I have tried a good chunk of the menu, and our favorites are the garlic shrimp and bbq chicken, but you cant go wrong picking anything! A combo platter, which is extremely filling, is about $14. They have "mini meals" for about $10, but sadly, my favorite item, the garlic shrimp, doesn't come as a mini meal.
I don't particularly like pork or chicken thighs, but I was all over the Kahlua pork and bbq chicken and chicken katsu misubi. My husband hates mayo, and he LOVES the macaroni salad. That's how good everything is!
The workers are all so helpful and kind.
My only complaint, which isn't enough to rate the place anything less than 5 stars, is that they use disposable containers and utensils regardless if you're eating in or taking out. We bring our own utensils and cloth napkins (I am a little extra, what can I say... I also find plastic utensils too flimsy to bother with anyway.) We don't live that close, so we eat in. I wonder if they would put the food in our own glass containers if we...
Read moreMahalo is easily king of the takeout game for most of center city. Between the amazing selection of hawaiian bbq entrees, a multitude of appetizers and sides, and a great selection of side sauces, youd be hard pressed to realize that the literal POUND of food stuffed into each to-go container is so cheap.
The fact that mahalo's MASSIVE portions are also insanely delicious is the final reason you must order to your heart's content the next time you're craving takeout, or dine in! You really cant go wrong with any of the meat combo plates, the standard entrees come with scoops of white rice and macaroni salad that pair perfectly with the sweet and savory meat of your choosing. The bbq chicken, pork, or short ribs always tend to be perfectly juicy and tender, and sides like the mahalo chicken bites or the purple duck bites are some of my regular favorites.
I do strongly reccomend that you dont order through doordash, as the owners have been having a piling list of issues because of them. I've ordered from them dozens of times, and every single order has been hot, fresh,...
