I eat at Maxwell's semi-regularly. Put it on my grandma that it is the best bang for your buck in terms of take out food in the area. Pay the extra few bucks and get the large size that comes with an extra side dish and entree, you'll have 3+ meals on your hands for $13 or so. Their patties are delectable, and they always have a fun, fruity mix of bottled pop (soda) to go with your meal.
More Temple students need to come to Maxwell's.
Everything on the menu that I've tried is fire, although I haven't tried the "Bun & Cheese" yet.... BUT their cabbage is out of this world, even if you're not a "cabbage" kind of person, you gotta try it. Their rice & peas is delicious, which everyone could expect that at a Jamaican restaurant. Their mac & cheese is perfect, has a real authentic soul food family cookout taste to it. My favorite entree hands down is the steak and peppers.
In terms of ambiance it's not the prettiest place; everything you order is for takeout. There are no tables to eat at inside (as of Sept. 2020). Although there is an ATM, they do accept payment by credit cards. One thing to keep in mind, too, is that they don't have everything available all the time. For example, if you show up later than dinner time, they may be out of one of the more specialized dishes like oxtail (incredible) or steak & peppers, because everything, and I mean EVERYTHING is home made and kept hot until they sell out, which they will. People in the area know and love Maxwell's Caribbean/American takeout, and...
Read moreMy best friend for over 20 years suggested that we go get something special for her birthday back in September of 2019. We both were thinking something meaty, savory, & Caribbean inspired. So naturally she suggested "Maxwell's"! Since I'm not from that side of Philly, I had no knowledge of this place. Now I've been to "Ron's", "Carib Grille", "Jamaican D's", & a few others... But on this wonderfully day of discovery... I found the missing element of my entire existence.
In their kitchen, I was able to see someone dancing while cooking... I heard laughter from someone stirring what appeared to be cabbage... And I heard tunes with a few steel drums playing a melodic tone. All of this was experienced BEFORE I even placed my order. This made me hype for my large oxtails with extra gravy, mac & cheese, rice & peas, and cabbage.
We waited about 30 minutes from the time we walked in, to the time we wobbled out the door, with white plastic bags that were cutting into our fingers, and into my car. The aroma quickly filled the car and I couldn't drive to the park fast enough to enjoy our food. It was truly the best Jamaican food that I have ever had all year!
My next "stimmy" is going right...
Read moreI previously said this place had good food but could work on there customer service. Since than they have hired a young guy, I Was cool with that. A whole platter is a little over whelming for me so I would only order curry chicken no sides. Trynna keep the waste tight you no how we do it. No problems went there a few times and got it. but for some reason one day I was leaving out the house looking extra cute it was a nice summer day I went there for my little curry chicken only. But was greeted by eye rolling females at the register with attitudes. I tried to look pass it cause I just want my food. I couldn't understand why but they refused to sale me curry chicken they said no we dont do that and I said i often come here for it. But when she started to get aggressive and loud I turned and left because now I dont even want you to have my money and dont want you handling my food. So now I drive all the way up west Philly 52nd and market for my curry chicken the service is friendly and plentiful wayyy more chicken and tastier. I actually feel like I get my...
