5 Stars – I Came. I Ate. I Ascended.
If I could give Barrio Queen more stars, I’d need a second Google account. This place isn’t just a restaurant — it’s a full-on culinary telenovela where your taste buds get the starring role.
Let’s start with the drinks: the margaritas here? Dios mío. Smooth, citrusy, and just dangerous enough to make you text your ex and your grandma in the same sitting. Each sip felt like a sun-drenched vacation for my soul.
Now, onto the appetizers, because I believe in starting strong: COCTEL DE ELOTE — This is not your sad, boiled-corn-from-a-fair situation. No, this is grilled corn royalty. Each kernel bathed in creamy aioli, dusted like it’s being tucked in by the Tajin fairy, with a blanket of cotija cheese so fine it should have its own Netflix special. Add lime and cilantro and you’ve got a spoonful of joy in every bite. ROASTED ELOTE — The whole cob version? It’s the Coctel’s more dramatic, extroverted cousin. The butter-mayo-cotija combo hits so hard you might make eye contact with a stranger and both start crying. In a good way.
Then came the entrée: Camarónes al Mojo de Ajo — If shrimp had a red carpet event, these bad boys were it. Perfectly sautéed in a garlicky, herbaceous, slightly spicy sauce that whispered sweet nothings in my ear. The poblano peppers added a little sass, the chile de árbol brought the heat, and the rice and calabacitas were like the backup dancers who steal the show during the finale. A+.
But wait. Dessert. Oh, sweet baby abuelita, dessert. The Three Leches Cake was a soft, creamy miracle that somehow made me believe in second chances and better decisions. Then came the Churros and Flan Trio — crispy on the outside, warm and doughy inside, dipped in sauces that made my eyes roll back. The flan? Silky. Smooth. Possibly illegal in some states due to how seductive it is.
Service? Impeccable. Friendly smiles, fast refills, and not a single judgmental glance when I ordered three desserts for “the table” (it was just me). The place is spotless, stylish, and buzzing with good energy.

Read moreThis location is beautifully decorated and has a wonderful patio. Love the fun and lively atmosphere. But service was slow and isn't the best. It could just be the particular day we visited, and maybe we will have a better experience on a future visit. They are probably short staffed like many of the restaurants in the valley.
Food...its probably really good, depending on what you ordered. I just didn't enjoy the dish I ordered. But my husband enjoyed his. I am mostly writing this review to remind myself to NOT order it again. 10 years ago, I ordered this same dish at their original location, and I hated it then. But I forgot what it was, and then got the same dish here, and well, I do not like it. I ordered the award winning Cochinita Pibil. The description sounded wonderful. Pork marinated in sour orange and achiote paste, then slow cooked all night in a banana leaf. Topped with pickle red onions and homemade pico de Gallo. Served with fresh hand press corn tortillas. Comes with beans and rice. All for a price of $22, which isn’t bad. Sounds sort of mouth watering right? Plus it says award winning with an ! next to it. But the flavors do not vibe with me. Sorry, do not hate me if you love this award winning dish. I was really hungry and I still could not finish this dish. I also felt the chips we were given was a little burnt. But the salsa was good and fresh.
I will come back here despite my experience. There are other wonderful food choices, and I liked the ambiance. It merits...
Read moreWe've been here a few times, each time hoping it would improve; no bueno!
Having been a resident of Arizona for nearly 50 years and traveler to most Latin American, Mexican and many South American countries I've had an opportunity to enjoy numerous locally prepared dishes. The food at Barrio Queen in all my previous and current visits falls short.
I ordered the Carne Asada (medium) for nearly $30 and have to say it was without doubt the worst meat I've ever had. It was tough, it was grissly and moreso, it was mostly tasteless. The visual appeal of the platter was OK, but not inviting.
We also had the table side guacamole (spicy) for $14 and it was pretty disappointing; again lack of taste served with fairly stale chips. The avocado (a single one) was not ripe, the added spices and ingredients were pretty bland but were visually appealing.
The chips that came with the house salsa were good and tasted fresh, the chips served with the guacamole were in stark contrast not so good.
The other dishes we had at the table (chicken quesadilla, enchiladas) while not bad, were definitely not anything memorable. The presentation and visual appeal were good, but taste was again pretty bland and not memorable.
Service was good and other than the 8-top seated next to us with the screaming toddlers, the inside atmosphere was pretty nice.
I hope your experience there is better than ours, but after several trips with several people I think we'll give this place a...
