Expected more from Sizzle and Shinbay’s sister company and just an upscale establishment in general. Food is just okay for normal prices and terrible for the prices they charge, very Americanized despite what they try to say. I know it’s their grand opening but I don’t see this place ever being good because the food ultimately is far from good. Waitress was telling customer they have lobster egg drop soup when it’s actually crab egg drop soup. Also saying they have japchae but meaning jjamppong. Waiter had to ask us multiple times randomly what we ordered after we clearly pointed at the time of ordering. They tried to give us other tables dishes multiple times. Then when they brought us one of our pork dishes (which they first tried to give to the table next to us and called it chicken) we said it wasn’t our dish because it didn’t match the picture on social media. Manager said that the pictures were labeled with the wrong dish names. Took them about 10 minutes for them and us to realize it was indeed our dish and they brought out the old one which was now cold instead of remaking it. Found it super coincidental the table next to us was getting our same dishes even though we ordered first. Later overheard they indeed were getting our dishes and so we had to wait longer for our food to be made. Waiter saw I was upset and asked if he could get us anything (to make up for all the issues.) I asked for rice and he later charged us $2 for it instead of just comping this minimum for all the issues. Meat quality was some of the worst I had. I understand they use dark meat chicken but it wasn’t cleaned of fat and was slimey. Most of their food is fried even their wok dishes and there’s no indication that some of the dishes are fried. We didn’t eat half of one of the dishes and expressed to the waiter we didn’t like it and why when asked. At the end we didn’t receive any comps, wasn’t even offered a free dessert- expect more from a fine dining establishment especially when our server acknowledged himself all the issues. Manager Christian was far from helpful in every interaction we had from him, seemed fake/disingenuous and not receptive despite saying he was appreciative of the feedback. Acted like they didn’t give the table next to us our food. The Arizona Asian community was so excited for this place to open and I’ll be sharing...
Read moreA Modern Take on Chinese Cuisine Falls Short We arrived at this modern Chinese restaurant at 6:00 PM without reservations and were promptly seated.
Our initial impression took a slight hit when we discovered they don't offer iced tea or fountain soft drinks. Instead, we paid $12 for two bottled Cokes, which felt a bit steep.
For our appetizer, we ordered the Crispy Eggrolls. They arrived quickly and, for $14, we received three egg rolls elegantly presented on butter lettuce. The flavor was good, but ultimately unremarkable.
For our main courses, we chose the Genghis Khan Beef, Chili Garlic Fried Chicken, and Jin Jia Fried Rice.
The Genghis Khan Beef, priced at $28, was arguably the standout dish and showed the most promise. The thin slices of beef were cooked perfectly, and the addition of mushrooms and vegetables provided much-needed texture. However, like the other meat dish, it was excessively salt-forward, largely overpowering any other flavors. I suspect an overuse of soy sauce in the sauce.
The Chili Garlic Chicken, also $28, was merely "okay." Again, it suffered from a dominant salty profile. The chicken, likely thigh meat, was unfortunately quite fatty at times, with some pieces being almost entirely fried chicken fat. The green peppers were overcooked, and the dish lacked any textural variety beyond the fried chicken itself. It wasn't bad, but it was unremarkable and even forgettable.
The Jin Jia Fried Rice was... well, just fried rice. It's rarely a dish that stands out, and this was no exception.
Our total bill, including a tip, came to $122 ($105 before tip).
The service was attentive and prompt, and the atmosphere was modern and inviting. Despite these positives, the food felt overpriced; it would be fair value at half the cost.
Ultimately, there are better dining options in the area...
Read moreI made reservations for right when they opened at 1130 on a Sunday. We were the only patrons for about 20 minutes. After reading some reviews, I went in thinking food would take a while but i'm sure being alone there helped. Service was great. We were greeted promptly and with a big warm smile by the hostess. They asked if we wanted a booth or a table and we got a beautiful booth. Great ambiance. Both the hostess and our waiter mentioned my birthday, since I put on the reservation. He told me immediately that the dessert of our choice would be on the house. Our waiter was very friendly and gave great suggestions. The manager stopped by at some point to check in. Everyone greeted us with smiles and were warm and friendly. We each had two signature gin based drinks and enjoyed both of them, the citrus blossom being our favorite. We started with the hot and sour soup and the prawn toast. My husband loves hot and sour soup and has been disappointed in recent ones. But the waiter assured us it was good and he was right. It was a large portion and it was delicious. The prawn toast was unique and I loved the contrast of the warm fried prawns and toast dipped in the chilled lemon cream. For entrees we enjoyed the chili garlic fried chicken and the Genghis khan beef. Both were delicious and good portions. For my birthday dessert I had the banana lumpia. I love a good banana lumpia. And it came with lots of marscapone ,which honestly I could have done without but that's just personal preference. I hope this place sticks around because it's nice having this more upscale restaurant here at desert ridge. Cost was about two hundred dollars for the two of us. This would also be a great place just to stop and sit at the beautiful...
