We found such a nice little Mexican food spot. The entrance leads you in with the kitchen on your direct left and the dining room/seating to the right. The atmosphere was very relaxed and welcoming. Great spot for family or a date night. The staff were all kind and professional, all the food and drinks came out fairly quickly.
5 Star - hibiscus salsa was amazing. Unique and unlike anything we’ve had before. There is a decent amount of heat on the back end, it subtly comes. We put this just about all the food we had.
5 Star - Margarita Flight. The size of the drinks and the amount of alcohol was surprisingly fantastic. The base flavors came across as an aguas frescas which provided more depth of flavor. Our favorite was the hibiscus, then the cucumber jalapeño and last strawberry.
4 Star - The taco corazon: the shredded beef was a bit sweet but full of flavor. The grilled onions on top were a nice touch. This would be a five star if the taco were crispy. I really enjoyed the marinade on the Al Pastor taco was. It wasn’t goopy and the balance of pineapple and onions made this an above average taco.
4 Star - The Chiles En Nogada was almost a 3 Star. It was really good, with a great amount of flavorful pork. We would have liked if they add more dried fruit, to better balance the amount of pork. The sauce was perfectly sweet, but we would have liked it to be a little less grainy, so blend it for longer.
4 Star - The white rice was sweet and something neither of us have tasted before. The rice had pineapple, corn and maybe a little bit of carrot. So simple but really well done.
4 Star - The guacamole was not the best we have had, but it was better than most restaurants. It was freshly made and there were great size pieces of avocado too.
3.5 Star - The tacos de chicharron. The fried pork skin rinds were wonderfully crispy but they were lacking in flavor a bit. I was not a fan of the house paste tomatoes. I was so excited for this but the soft corn tortilla with crispy pork rinds and heavy amount of paste just didn’t work for me.
Overall we were very impressed with the uniqueness of their food and drinks, as well as the quality overall. We will be absolutely be back to try more items on their menu!
3* = Good but no separation from similar restaurants 4** = Set themselves a part with unique food and I want to go back. 5*= You have to go out of your way and make a special trip to try the deliciousness...
Read moreThe atmosphere is captivating for a Mexican restaurant. When you walk in, you’ll see a full view of the kitchen. As a retired chef, I’m always impressed when restauranteurs are proud enough to allow patrons to see the “back of the house.” We visited this restaurant for the first time with guests from upstate New York that don’t get to experience authentic Mexican food very often. It is surprising to me how difficult it is to find good to excellent Mexican food here in the southwest, but sadly, mediocrity seems to be the norm. We tried Casa Corazon based on the reviews we’ve read. Now on to the food.
Starting with the chips, they were very fresh and not overly salty. The salsas varied from mild to flame-throwing hot as hell. I particularly enjoyed the salsa tasting like a combination of berry and habanero that set my lips aflame. It had the perfect balance of flavor and heat. I was impressed with the sheer number of salsas they offered. The bacon-wrapped stuffed appetizer peppers we ordered were a hit with most of us, except for one pansy from New York, but her sons seemed to appreciate them. I ordered the beef flautas. While the size of the two on the plate were quite large, I prefer corn tortillas instead of flour, as the sauce makes the flour tortillas soggy, whereas corn tortilla would have stayed crunchy. The beef had adequate seasoning, although a bit more spice would be welcomed. My wife ordered the shrimp fajitas and said the homemade tortillas tasted delicious. It’s nice that they plate black beans rather than the typical mashed refried beans, and their rice is a lighter version than the typical tomato based Spanish rice, which is a refreshing difference.
While the food quality is substantially higher than most TexMex in the Phoenix area, so is the price. Our dinner ticket was about twice what we would pay anywhere else. As a chef, I understand the ingredient pricing of Mexican food. While a appreciate their menu offerings, their pricing is excessively high for Mexican food. Our server was professional, courteous, and attentive, without being bothersome. They understood the menu and were knowledgeable about the ingredients and preparation, and could make recommendations and upsell when needed. If you are looking for something different in the way of food south of the border, give this place a try, but be willing to pay for...
Read moreIntended to eat at a different MX restaurant down the street, but since they were closed the eve of thanksgiving, we ended up trying here. Glad the other place was closed.
Margaritas we're heavy on the ice and low on the tequila, but high on fresh taste (juice tasted clean and squeezed). Definitely get one.
In-house tortillas were a hit in our party of 4. Those who didn't have one were jealous. I'd put these in our top 5 tortillas, in fact.
I was all set and pumped to order the cochonita pibil, but on a last second whim, went with the adventurous chiles en nogada covered in almond blonde sauce. I was curious how they'd do this, and was pleasantly surprised, though I'd recommend a modification for the chefs. It was uniquely sweet with pomegranate seeds sprinkled for interesting effect. Smallish pepper, but that's ok. The side pinto and rice were cooked perfectly to fill the belly. Try being a more reserved on the almond sauce... My plate was gobs more sauce than pepper... There was minimal flavor of anything beyond the almond.
Fajitas were a solidly filling plate, 🐔 was tender and not dry.
Camarones Rancheros was fine but most applauded for keeping the spice within the peppers and not intertwined in the sauce. This allowed my fellow diner to pick and choose what amount of spice he wanted with each bite. Big win!
Fourth person had the quesadillas. She said all was good, but the tortillas made them great.
The restaurant space is very well done (and clearly had some money invested in the buildout). If there was a way to make a warmer feel, please do it. There were a bunch of well-placed tea candles next to our table, and if they were lit, we might have loved the ambience more.
Being that this is southern MX fare hosted by a Sonoran chef adds to some adventure while keeping things familiar, I'd look forward to another visit to try some other things in the menu (and perhaps...
