So BuzzFeed listed this place as one of the 27 must visit ice cream shops before you die. I don't think this place should have made the cut. It's good but, not amazing good.
I was in town with my family helping my sister move in for school. I was really excited to try this place after seeing the list on BuzzFeed. I LOVE ICE CREAM! I could eat it everyday!
What We Ordered Ice Cream Sandwich: 2 Cookies (Kitchen Sink and Chocolate Chunk) with 2 Ice Cream Flavors (Cookies & Mint and The Stout) Fat Elvis Sundae S'Mores Sundae
I got the ice cream sandwich. The Cookies & Mint and The Stout was a good combo together! I could have done without the cookies. The Staff recommended me getting the ice cream sandwich instead of the cone. The cookies were not that good. The Kitchen Sink Cookie was super hard!!! Not a fan of hard cookies...and no, they were not hard because of the cold ice cream. The Chocolate Chunk Cookie was really moist but too salty. I really like sea salt chocolate type cookies but this just had too much salt. :( I was really sad... I usually love cookies too. $5 for basically just the ice cream, not worth it. :(
My sister's boyfriend got the Fat Elvis. He seemed to enjoy it. My sister LOVED her S'Mores Sundae but she wished there were more Graham crackers in it.
I did not like the fact that there were no inside seating. Arizona is super hot. Why would there not be any indoor seating?! They had tables outside but there were a bunch of flies flying around back there. :(
-1 STAR for hard/salty cookies -0.5 STAR no indoor seating and they limit the amount of...
Read moreTLTR: Crowded chaos, and out of multiple toppings. Not a great experience. Although the ice cream itself was good, it is hard to mess up ice cream. The store is pretty small and there was a line out the door when we went. There is seating out back so while you are standing in line there are people going back out the front and you are constantly moving out of the way. They didnt have the sweet cream on the board for flavors like they did online and in the pamphlet in the store. They were out of the toffee sauce too which were the only things I wanted. My luck. My boyfriend got the strawberry shortcake, and they were out of strawberry sauce. The once piece of shortcake he got was really hard. Behind the desk seems a little chaotic. One guy took my order, the girl at the register asked for my order again and took my boyfriends order, the guy got my ice cream the girl got my boyfriends ice cream. there were 3 people and everyone was just bouncing around doing everything, everyone is at the register, everyone is getting the ice cream, everyone is getting the toppings. It would be easier and more efficient if they were like places like subway or Chipotle. One person scoops, slides your ice cream to the next person who adds the toppings, or makes it a shake ect, then gives it to the person at the...
Read moreStill good.....but, something's changed. Churn is a longtime favorite for our family and a no-brainer stop after dinner across the street at another staple, Federal Pizza. Most things are still amazingly delicious but we've noticed some changes in a few of the things that we'll gladly drive more than 30 mins across town to enjoy.
The brownies are now 1/3 the size they used to be. Perfectly appropriate to top an ice cream concoction with but as a stand alone treat they're now more of two bite teaser for the same cost.
The most disappointing for me was the change in the hot fudge. The homemade from scratch, dark chocolate & butter melted in a double boiler liquid gold is, apparently, no more. This stuff was legendary and I would occasionally be satisfied to just savor a few pumps in a cup with a spoon. They've switched to the same corn syrupy, gloppy, goopy stuff you can get just about anywhere. Disappointing!
Churn is still a unique and special ice cream shoppe with some of the best ice cream, desserts, charm and nostalgia in the valley but the changes we've noticed have dampened our enthusiasm a bit. We hope this isn't a significant shift in...
