I do not know what happened to Chinese food, at least in Oregon. Back in NY where I grew up, our father would bring home Chinese food once a week. Where did barbecued spareribs disappear to? What happened to reliable chicken chow mein? When I moved to Chicago I had the most incredible sweet n' sour pork. Now, no where to be found. The Golden Phoenix has ample parking. I give it one of the two stars for that. The setting inside is comparable to a federal institution; it is dark, unattractive, gloomy to be exact. The place does not smell good. We ordered cashew chicken chow mein, egg foo yong, sweet n' sour chicken and broccoli in oyster sauce. The only employee in the restaurant is possibly the owner and the cook. When we walked in, she was in the back cooking our takeout. Earlier, she had not been very nice when we called. The "Food" is hard to describe. Let me say that the egg foo yong might be better called egg poo young. The smell in our car had me close to nausea and retching. Unedible. It did not look like nor taste like what I have had at least 50 times in my life before. The cashews in the cashew chicken dish were old and almost soggy almonds--not edible and tossed. The sweet n' sour chicken was chicken in a fried batter that you dipped into the chef's sweet n' sour sauce. It was edible if you were really hungry. The only decent dish was the broccoli in oyster sauce. But compared to other restaurants serving snow peas in lobster sauce, it was at most on a scale of 0-10 a 5 or 6 if I were generous.
Bottom line: I do not know how this restaurant stays afloat. When my wife and I were traveling in China we took a cooking class and our first attempt at Chinese cuisine was logarithmically better than Golden Phoenix. For those giving this restaurant a 4 or 5 star rating, I would wonder if they were not indulging in cannabis. For those history buffs, I echo kind of the words of General Douglas MacArthur: "I shall...
Read moreToo bad that several patrons have had bad experiences at this restaurant. I’ve had nothing but great tasting food, served by courteous and helpful people, and it’s been that way every time I’ve been there. Fresh, hot food for a fair price in a friendly atmosphere ... looks right to me ! Thank you ! I’d like to mention some things that I’ve eaten here that are worth mentioning since I last posted the review above. Happened to try their Marfar chicken, which is very similar to Kim’s from several years back. The best ever : chunks of white meat with a light, crunchy coating ... amazing ! And their crab puffs are a must have. Actually more crab meat than cream cheese, together with a hint of green onion. Delicious ! Love me some...
Read moreHorrible experience Yesterday!!! Owner/waitress was extremely rude starting with telling my mom can you see the signs? It says no msg, then charged us an extra plate charge when we ordered a special but it says that in the menu she says...yeah, but we didn't order from the menu, she then says we are lucky she didn't charge us for extra hot tea because one pot can serve 6 people and we were a party of only 3...and one more thing sister asked for extra container and she said no it will fit and proceeded to tell her how to do that. There is more but bottom line is you can go some place else where they appreciate your service and don't argue with customer's with such hostile attitude. Obviously never stepping thru their...
