I was looking for Hawaiian food, and this was pretty close to Ono on the map so I thought I'd try something different - I didn't really read reviews before arriving so I thought it would have more of a dine-in option but it's definitely a ghost kitchen setup. To their credit, they do have a table inside and a couple tables outside if you wanted to eat on site, but it's not really the place to go if you're looking for a dine-in experience. The little table I ate at was fine but it could be nice to have some music or something in that first waiting area, just to make a better environment if you do decide to eat in.
The restaurant's part of this bigger thing called the Highland Food Hub, which is like a giant ghost kitchen with a bunch of restaurants running out of it and they all are geared towards takeout orders and apps. I definitely want to come back and try some other stuff too because there's a lot of options here.
I got a mixed plate with Hawaiian chicken and the sweet spicy chicken. They don't really have a huge selection outside of chicken and they didn't have katsu either, just different types of marinated chicken and one pork dish that I didn't try. I ordered extra mac salad and less rice because I love mac salad. I also got a spam musubi on the side. I'm glad I ordered the spam musubi, because the portions were on the smaller side than I'm used to when I order Hawaiian food. The food was solid, but not really craveable. No major complaints, but the two chicken dishes didn't really taste a whole lot different... They were kind of just both sweet, but they were cooked well. The noodles in the mac salad were undercooked when I think of Hawaiian mac salad, but cooked fine for a more white-person mac salad if that makes sense lol. It was also just super black pepper heavy, kind of one note. The spam musubi was fine - maybe a little burnt if I'm being super critical.
Overall, I think it's cool that this place exists because Ono Hawaiian is pretty much one of the only options and it's good to have diversity in Hawaiian food restaurants. I feel like next time I would just go to Ono though... Their mac salad is just so much more...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI was in Dallas for a few months and thoroughly enjoyed the Hawaiian Brothers restaurants in Dallas. They were actual restaurants with drive-thruās and people as one would expect this new style of food pick-up made me feel like I was in a sterile style, cafeteria, a hospital, or something depressing. I could get over that if the food tasted like it did in Dallas. I was so excited to find out Hawaiian Brothers came to Phoenix after leaving Dallas because that was one of the main things I would miss about Dallas. The food and customer service quality is definitely not the same. If you Decline the Mac salad for example, normally the restaurants in Dallas will give you double rice. That does not happen in AZ. The second time I came (I went to the one in Tempe the first time), I had to specifically say ādouble Riceā in my order. My chicken was dry. Thereās barely any sauce. Yes, some of the sauce for the chicken stained the rice, but it still wasnāt enough because the sauce really helps. Additionally, thereās too much fat in the chicken. When I went to the one in Tempe, there was no fat so I didnāt complain as much. The second time thereās lots of fat. If I had not gone to the ones in Dallas and experienced the authentic Hawaiian Brothers Grill, atmosphere? I probably wouldnāt complain, but I also would not return. This is definitely disappointing after eating so many times at the real restaurants with real Hawaiian Brothers...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI've ordered from Hawaiian Bros Island Grill a couple of times now. First time I got the large mixed plate and the second time I got the classic mixed plate. First time I ordered, I got the Huli Huli Chicken/ Molokai Chicken with Rice and Mac. The portions are pretty big, especially the rice, and not only do they give you a bed of rice under the chicken but also a huge ball of it and to me this was just too much. Next time, I'll substitute the rice for veggies so it's well balanced. The Mac wasn't my thing. I wasn't particularly fond of it... To me it gave Macaroni Salad vibes (that was probably the point) but without all the extra things that go into Macaroni Salad and so it was just bland. Both types of chicken though? 10/10. My only complaint about my second time ordering is that the pineapple wasn't quite ripe and so was more sour than...
