Macalpine's Diner isn't just another diner. It's a big heaping slice of Americana! In addition to the restaurant which has a genuine soda fountain from the 1920s, there's also an antique retro store that has items that I'm sure go back pre Statehood. Don't go if you're in a hurry you want to take all the time you need to look do everything and then when you're done looking come on out and enjoy the meal. I like the fact the food is non pretentious Standard Diner type food the kind that was popular in America in the mid-twentieth century. But of course the star of the show is desserts oh, and the ice cream dessert in particular. There's a separate menu for the ice cream desserts alone! They offer a wide variety of ice cream sodas oh, sundaes and other desserts. You can even get pie alamode if that's your desire. I had a hard time deciding but he eventually decided upon the rocky road sundae. Very chocolatey and very delicious. If you're old enough to remember the Thrifty drug store ice cream then this will be right up your alley. It took me back 30 years just eating that dessert. This place is very cute for a date but it's also welcoming for families as well as singles who are dining alone. In the winter you might want to take advantage of the outdoor seating. Now don't expect some squeaky clean pretentious fake 50s Diner scene you would find in some Mall. This is a 90 year old building and looks it. It'sthe real deal when it comes to genuine neighborhood restaurants does Joe cater specifically to tourists. Casual dining with a friendly wait staff who dress in 1950s retro...
Read moreMy husband and I met friends for lunch. It was a busy Sunday around noon and we were able to grab the last table. Service was prompt and friendly and the atmosphere was nostalgic and fun. The old soda fountain is there which is quite a sight to see! The menu is full of excellent options but not so overwhelming that it takes forever to decide. My husband had the turkey/bacon/avocado on a croissant which he said was really good. I had the Reuben and French fries. One of the best Reubens I've ever had!! The meat is perfect, not fatty or overly cooked. The fries are crispy on the outside and fluffy on the I side...so good! My girlfriend had a cheeseburger and said that it was excellent. Her husband had the Club Sandwich and said it was very good and that he would order it again. Let's talk dessert (even though we were pretty full we couldn't leave without dessert). The Ice Cream Soda menu is packed with awesome options but we were offered the Sundae menu as an extra selection. Holy Moley what a tough decision!! My husband had a Root Beer Float. My friend's husband and I each had the Wallace and Lladmo Sundae (divine!!!!) and my girlfriend had a simple chocolate malt. No one was unhappy with their choice for sure!! Our sundaes had 3 scoops or ice cream, hot fudge, whipped cream, sprinkles and a cherry on top...all for $10.50!!! The prices are very reasonable! This is a great place for families and those who love a good meal in a cool, nostalgic restaurant. I'm looking forward to...
Read moreI only went in because I saw they had strawberry ice cream from the machine which I have been looking for.
I stared at the cashier because I literally felt like I was transported to the 20's in a time machine! Talk about being in character! She dressed the part and acted the part! Ihad to apologize to her for my staring but I did not expect to be transported like that when I walked in. She she was rather kind about it. I'm thinking she is used to that reaction from newcomers.
The wait was kinda long as far as taking my order, but both cashier acknowledged me and the first one let me know she had two orders ahead of me. For those who say no one attended to you, please note that there is a sign at the door that says to seat your self. It is easy rather easy to miss so I think they could place that on the front door.
The atmosphere seemed pleasant, though I did feel a bit out of place since I was the only one that looked differently from all who was there at the time I went. Nonetheless, I was not made to feel out of place which is very good.
I paid for my ice cream which was over $5 before the tip! That was a little high so I expected an extraordinary taste. I was greatly disappointed as I coukd have gotten a quart of strawberry ice cream on sale at Safeway for $2.99 and I believe that taste is even bettee. This would by why I removed one...
