Another gem that I let sit in the sand for the last 15 years or so. Almost everyday I pass Texaz Grill and think nothing of it,every few years I think I should try it. Today is that day! When you walk in those doors you could be in the 1990s,1980s or even the 1890s. Dimmed lights, fixtures that are vintage. I like when I walk into a place and that environment changes the way you feel. It feels like an older tyme saloon or a home out on the frontier. The greeter was super nice and attentive, walking us through the daily specials. Our server was also attentive and speedy, drinks arrived within a minute or two. Not knowing the portion sizes we went in heavy on the menu. First up some french fries and Texaz fries with a Frito pie. Amazing thick cut fries cooked to perfection, loved them. The Texaz fries although good we're not our style, thick cut triangles and cubes with skin on. The Frito pie was delicious,I'm not big on chili but I think Ive found my favorite chili EVER!. On to the main event, first up the WORLD FAMOUS chicken fried steak, this monster could feed a family of 5. You get 2 pieces that resemble to small pizzas, smothered in country gravy. Partnered with a bowl of corn and some buttermilk biscuits 🤤. It really is a must have item. Next the chicken fried chicken, this special is a half of chicken,I repeat a HALF OF A CHICKEN. Everytime I watched an episode of Bonanza or Little House on the Prairie and they made fried chicken,THIS WAS THAT FRIED CHICKEN. Golden, piping hot and the best way I could describe the crispiness, would be double or triple crispy. It was amazing, the best fried chicken EVER! Mashed potatoes with the skin on was good but I prefer mine with some gravy. Lastly the chicken fried goodness....you get a fried beef steak,a chicken fried pork chop and a fried chicken breast. Another humongous plate of food. Finished the meal with a peach cobbler. A perfectly ripe peach cobbler with a nice big scoop of ice cream,a real treat. This is comfort food, you feel relaxed, you feel like family and when the food comes out you feel overwhelmed yet excited...We all felt like the food was lightly salted just needed a little more but then again it felt like this is how the food would have been prepared way back when. Texaz Grill don't ever change, we need places like this. They only downside was parking, the lot is extremely small and tight (and we went in a Prius). So please take a small car and be careful.

Why oh why isn't there beer on tap? A roadhouse style place like this screams for tap beer and with a name like TexAZ they should have one TX one and one AZ one so you can have beer tasting duels.Anyway, definitely an atmospheric place to feast on country fare and if they take my suggestions they will be even better. Coleslaw tasted like it was just mayo added to cabbage so we doctored ours at the table with salt, sugar, pepper, and asked for some lemons. Much better, but I don't go out to eat to be my own chef. Try adding the items suggested or toss in something like celery seeds, caraway, a hint of onion, apple bits, splash of vinegar, salad dressing like Miracle Whip instead of mayo. Find some combo of flavors and make it something people will look forward to and be a signature slaw. Biscuit was tasty but don't microwave it as it needs a quick trip to the oven to get back a slight dry crumb instead of being soggy warm. Meals are served on undersized plates so if you move one thing, something else will slide off. Consider serving sides like mashed potatoes in separate dishes and let the meats be solo stars. The chicken fried chicken meal looked just like the Chicken Fried Goodness of pork, beef, chicken and both were compromised by having the mashed potatoes (excellent homemade BTW) on the bottom, then had gravy on top of them, then the meats on top of that, and then more gravy. This plating compromises the crispy crusts, essentially steaming them and causing them to separate from the meat. Flavors were good for all, but the anticipated crispy "chicken fry" effect was only available for the parts that had managed to escape the gravy deluge. Tasty food should not be sacrificed by poor plating. Also, add some eye appeal atop the sea of white and tan with a little garnish--as simple as a little scattering of clipped parsley. Thankfully my catfish was spared the gravy drowning since I ordered the fries, which I was told were steak fries but were more like home fries but without the benefit of onion for flavor. No need to serve water unless requested--why waste water in AZ? WIth a little tweaking, the lone star from TX can be added to the 4 you already have to give you 5!

Average subpar lunch menu. Barely any flavor on the burger or "texaz fries" which arent french fries theyre bland fried roasted potatoes which are like 1000F degrees when you try to pop em in your mouth. The staff was older but friendly our 1st visit. Had the brisket sandwich. Was disappointed and not expecting "shredded brisket" which was alright but the juice sogged the generic bun really quickly. The buns arent anything special, theyre like walmart grade generic cheap hamburger buns. Lots of people were ordering The $10 chicken fried steaks, which were huge, but their portions on the brisket, chicken sandwich $8.50 were meager and small. The chicken sandwich we had the next day was garbage. Stone cold old bacon the meat was like a burger king frozen patty. The hamburger was just as dreadful and pathetic. Same sorry generic bun. No dressing. Toppings were average but the meat was hella small. Like the 1980s Wendy's commerical, WHERES THE BEEF!? Im not even kidding. Not only was the portion small but the flavor wasnt there. I literally could have flushed my money down the toilet and got more utility out of it. To be fair we didnt try the dinner menu. But if the lunch menu stinks, not really interested. The place has a ton of old knick knacks on the walls. Open since 1985. Our waitress on the 2nd day was too busy talking blabberbox with her coworkers or other tables i had to wait FOREVER for a drink refill or the check. The pecan pie was good. But thats about it. Not planning to go back ever.

On Halloween we called to make sure they were open normal business hours and the girl we talked to said yes, open until 9. We got there around 8:15.

We tried to pull open the doors and they were locked…

Understandable if they want to close early for a holiday but, we had called to check so it was a super disappointing experience to have went out of the way to call and check, drive there, and then been lied to. Doubly disappointed because I had been dreaming about the food all evening and had excitedly told the neighbors where we were going after festivities.

Called the next day to talk to a manager because I was so dissatisfied and the first one we talked to was very understanding and said the manager on duty the night before would give us a call later to make it right. He never did, so I called the restaurant back later that evening thinking perhaps they had forgotten and asked to speak to a manager and the girl on the phone asked if this was about the Halloween incident…

Why would another staff member who wasn’t a manager know about this unless they had been talking about it to other staff??? I made sure to only tell a manager about the experience. It’s very disrespectful that the staff had been talking about us… very unprofessional.

Nonetheless was then transferred to the manager who had been working the night previously. Told him the experience and he couldn’t have sounded more bothered to listen to me. He also lied to me. Said that they had locked the doors at 8:30 bc it was slow. I remember checking the time on my phone. I don’t go to restaurants 30 mins before closing unless it’s to go because I work in the industry. It was 8:20 when I looked at my phone after trying the door because we had a quick smoke before trying to go inside.

All I got was a, “sorry we disappointed you”. Normally when a restaurant makes a mistake on their end they offer some sort of apology gesture to promote a good relationship and we received nothing on the promise that they would make it right.

Overall very very bad customer service perhaps the worst I’ve gotten in the valley. So sad because the food is so good but it was not an enjoyable experience to be made to feel like a burden, the staff talking about the experience when they should have never known, have been lied to twice, and then received nothing after everything to bring our business back after such a poor experience.

Was craving them so bad that night but now I don’t think I’ll ever crave them again. Had heard they were under new...
