Having a dinner at Diners 2+1 was a disappointing experience. First of all, the space - it looks like a cheap diner with no warmth or comfort to it. No efforts have been put into making it look like an inviting place. There are two counters in the room - both looks like they've been salvaged from some closing non-food store. One of them - looking pretty much abandoned and unused but still for some reason standing there. The second one holds supplies like napkins and utensils - isn't looking pretty either. There are also two refrigerators in the dining room making fairly loud noises. One of the waiters was wearing what looked like swimming trunks. For heave's sake! Couldn't he wear something decent? I was underwhelmed by special sushi rolls. They were not seasoned enough and there was too little sauce added. And you can forget about such "luxuries" as tobiko or even sesame seeds - the owners cut all the corners they can. Also the waitress brought us the low sodium soy sauce without asking, and I didn't realize until I dipped sushi into it and ate it. And after she brought us our food she didn't come to our table again until she decided it was the time to bring us our bill. In summary, I will not be coming back...
Read moreThe food was okay but it really depended on what you picked. We selected the lunch special of salad, miso soup, and two sushi rolls for $11. We picked a spicy California roll (good), spicy tuna, spicy salmon, and tune/avocado rolls. The spicy tuna and spicy salmon rolls were mass produced for the lunch service and we decided after one bite that we didn’t love them. These two rolls (spicy tuna and spicy salmon) are the mushy fish that is mixed with the spicy seasoning. However, the good, the spicy California roll was better than just a regular California roll. It was seasoned well and while it uses imitation crab meat it was a nice tasting roll. The tuna/avocado roll was the best of them all and it was a nice fresh slice of tuna and had a nice avocado piece.
We also had the Japanese chicken katsu curry bowl and it was really well balanced. It reminded me of my mother-in-laws Asian style curry and it was tasty. The flavors were on point and the cook on the chicken was just right.
For a quick lunch it was good but not one of those places I would drive across town to visit. If you are in Squirrel Hill go grab some Japanese cuisine and have a nice time with your...
Read moreDo not get the BBQ. Do not order the sushi. Service is awful and they automatically give themselves a 18% tip without notice. I checked the menu and it did not indicate an automatic tip. We were a party of 4.
The sushi rice was completely off - it was too dry, it tasted like old rice!? The fish was not fresh, though I don’t blame them entirely. They did their best for being in a landlocked state.
The BBQ is not traditional LOL. I don’t know what this was but it was not Japanese BBQ or Korean BBQ. We got the Combo A and while it’s certainly more than enough for 2 people, the meats did not taste good at all.
The vegetables were mushroom and onion and 3 half pieces of lettuce.
It was truly PAINFUL to watch the server make our BBQ. She hovered the whole time it took to cook the chicken, constantly flipping it. It’s possible this was her first time cooking in her life.
Thankfully we saved her and ourselves the pain after she made the first meat, and cooked the rest of the...
