Tl;dr - Absolutely terrible service and mediocre food. This was one of the worst dining expriences I had in the past few years. My friend and I stopped in for lunch and ordered. My friend ordered an omelet without spinach. She noticed the waiter did not write down her request for no spinach so she specified "no spinach" for a second time. After an incredibly long wait, our food finally arrives and her omelet has spinach. It's not just that my friend doesn't like spinach, she is possibly allergic as it makes her really sick when she eats it. Even if she simply did not like spinach, asking one time should have been enough. My food was mediocre - nothing to write home about. We waited over 40 minutes for her second omelet. There was barely anyone else at the restaurant at this point. Several tables which arrived after us were able to leave before us. The waiter barely paid any attention and had a bit of an attitude. After about 30 minutes of waiting I had asked where the bathrooms were and also asked if there was any update on my friend's omelet. The hostess acted like I had just slapped her in the face she had such an attitude. Absolutely terrible service and mediocre food - do...
Read morePros - great coffee, excellent service, delicious Turkish link sausage, foodie type menu. I had pretty good French toast, and on another occassion the veggie omlette.
Cons - ONLY foodie menu items, terrible home fries (tiny, squared, tasteless potatoes), no french fries on the menu to go with lunch - only terrible, tiny, tasteless potato squares, $2.00 for side of jelley - big deal it is homemade- "it ain't that great." On principle alone, a breakfast place should never upcharge for jelly and who wants a cheeseburger without french fries?! The only other place that does this is Tessaros and their homefries are magically delicious. USD should check them out if they don't want to use a fryer.
The Upstreet Diner should be jammed packed every morning because it is the only sit-down breakfast place in Squirrel Hill. Sadly, it is not. The menu states the restaurant is in its "soft open" phase. If the owner doesn't update the menu soon by adding more options that appeal to the masses, the restaurant won't make it in the long run. :(
Again, I want to emphasize how great the service was on the two times I ate there. The meals I had were delicious.

Read moreAnti-Semitic There is no nice way to say this: The restaurant allows their help to treat customers horribly based on their religion &/or skin color. I have never before experienced Antisemitism in a restaurant until I ate here. (Also, an African-American woman eating there told me she was sure she was treated very poorly based only on her skin color). Apparently the owner(s), doesn't care as this mistreatment of customers is knowingly allowed to continue. Other more trivial negatives: the service can be horrible depending on the waitress, but overall never as friendly or as courteous as in other restaurants, mistakes are too often made, any request is met with rigidity & coldness ("we can't make eggs over medium...only over light;"), erroneous extra charges are knowingly added without telling the customer;(explanation given: I knew it was incorrect but didn't know how to enter it correctly into the register); everything has an added cost to the point of being ridiculous, the overall atmosphere is cold & strange but worst of all bigoted. People should be aware that if they come here they may be mistreated based solely on their religion or skin...
